AFCON 2025
Mohamed Aboutrika Hails Super Eagles As “Team With No Obvious Weaknesses” After Algeria Win
Two-time Africa Cup of Nations champion Mohamed Aboutrika has showered glowing praise on the Super Eagles, describing Nigeria as a team with “no obvious weaknesses” following their impressive victory over Algeria at AFCON 2025.
Nigeria booked their place in the semifinals with a commanding 2–0 win over the Desert Warriors on Saturday, further cementing their status as one of the tournament’s standout sides.
Nigeria Too Strong For Algeria
After a cagey first half that ended goalless, the Super Eagles raised their level after the break. Victor Osimhen opened the scoring with a trademark finish before Akor Adams sealed the victory, sending Nigeria through to a mouthwatering semifinal clash with hosts Morocco.
The win marked another dominant display from Eric Chelle’s men, who remain unbeaten in the tournament and continue to combine physical strength with technical quality.
Aboutrika’s Verdict
Speaking on beIN Sports, Aboutrika was full of admiration for Nigeria’s all-round performance, insisting Algeria were simply outmatched.
“The strongest team is the one that won, and Nigeria has no obvious weaknesses,” Aboutrika said.
“Physically, they were very present, and technically as well. They have playmakers and strikers, and they excel in physical and aerial duels.”
The Egyptian legend highlighted how Nigeria controlled key moments of the game, neutralising Algeria’s threats while imposing their own style.
Key Players Shine
Aboutrika also singled out several Super Eagles stars for praise, pointing to the balance across all departments of the team.
“Osimhen in attack, Iwobi and Ndidi in midfield, Akor on the right flank, plus a solid defensive line—they played almost flawlessly,” he added.
“It’s a deserved victory, as Nigeria was the better and stronger side in the match.”
The blend of experience, energy, and tactical discipline has made Nigeria one of the most complete teams left in the competition.
Eyes On Morocco
Nigeria will now face host nation Morocco on Wednesday, January 14, in what will be their 16th AFCON semifinal appearance. With confidence high and praise pouring in from African football royalty, the Super Eagles will believe they are just two wins away from continental glory.
If performances so far are anything to go by, Aboutrika’s assessment may prove prophetic.
