Goes Back A Long Way – Brendan Rodgers Explains Cristiano Ronaldo Connection After Viral Al Nassr And Al Qadsiah Embrace
Brendan Rodgers has opened up on the emotional story behind his viral post-match embrace with Cristiano Ronaldo, revealing that their connection goes far beyond football and stretches back many years.
The touching moment between the Al Qadsiah manager and the Al Nassr captain after their Saudi Pro League clash on May 3 quickly spread across social media, with fans surprised to see such warmth following a fiercely competitive match that ended in a 3-1 win for Al Qadsiah.
But for Rodgers, the moment carried deep personal meaning.
A Bond Built On Respect And History
Rodgers explained that his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo began during his early coaching days in England, long before either man reached their current status in world football.
“Our connection goes back a long way,” Rodgers said.
He recalled a moment from his time at Chelsea when a family experience created a lasting memory involving the Portuguese superstar.
“My mother was at a Chelsea game against Manchester United and wanted to meet Cristiano Ronaldo, who was her favourite player at the time,” Rodgers explained.
Despite the rivalry at the time, Rodgers said Ronaldo showed immediate kindness and respect.
A Gesture That Meant Everything
Rodgers revealed that he personally approached Ronaldo after the match to request a meeting with his mother — and what followed left a permanent emotional impact.
“I spoke to Cristiano after the game and asked if he could greet my mother, and he did,” Rodgers said.
“He spent time with her, took a picture, and said very kind words to her. That moment has always stayed with me.”
He added that his mother, who passed away in 2010, always remembered that meeting with great joy.
Ronaldo’s Lasting Influence
Beyond the personal story, Rodgers also praised Ronaldo’s massive influence on global football, particularly his role in transforming the Saudi Pro League into a destination for elite talent.
“He’s probably the reason why so many people from Europe and all over the world are here in Saudi Arabia,” Rodgers said.
Even after a difficult match on the pitch, Rodgers insisted that respect for Ronaldo remains unchanged.
Football Moments That Go Beyond The Game
The viral embrace between Rodgers and Ronaldo reminded fans that football is not only about results, rivalry, or trophies — but also about human connection.
In a league filled with global superstars and high-pressure moments, this exchange stood out as something different: genuine respect between two professionals who share a meaningful history.
And sometimes, those are the moments that travel the furthest.
