David Raya Opens the Door to La Liga Move as Arsenal Future Remains in Focus
Sports Marketing International | Football News | 21 October 2026
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya has hinted that a move to Spanish football could be on the cards later in his career, admitting that he would love to experience La Liga despite being happy in North London.
The Spanish international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout goalkeepers since becoming a key figure at Arsenal. His performances have helped strengthen the Gunners’ defensive foundation, while his consistency has earned him significant individual recognition.
Speaking to Spanish newspaper Marca, Raya made it clear that although his immediate future remains with Arsenal, he has not ruled out returning to his homeland to compete in Spain’s top division.
“I would love to try out La Liga. For now, I’m very happy here at Arsenal, but I would certainly like to experience the Spanish league,” Raya said.
He also praised the competitiveness of Spanish football and reiterated his interest in representing a Spanish club at some point in his career.
“I think it’s a very competitive league. Perhaps, in the future, I could play for a Spanish club. I’m Spanish, and I’d love to play there — that’s for sure,” he added.
Raya’s Rise to the Top in English Football
Raya, who grew up supporting Real Madrid, has spent his entire professional career in England. He moved to Blackburn Rovers’ academy as a teenager and gradually worked his way through English football before earning recognition among the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers.
His development reached another level at Arsenal, where his performances between the posts have made him an important part of the club’s ambitions.
According to the supplied report, Raya has won the Premier League Golden Glove in three consecutive campaigns and received a nomination for the 2026 Yashin Trophy, which recognises outstanding goalkeeping performances at the Ballon d’Or awards.
These achievements underline his growing reputation and help explain why Arsenal would be keen to retain his services for the foreseeable future.
What Does This Mean for Arsenal?
Raya’s comments do not indicate that he is preparing to leave Arsenal. Instead, they suggest that playing in Spain is an ambition he would like to fulfil later in his career.
His current contract reportedly runs until 2028, giving Arsenal an important opportunity to discuss an extension before his deal approaches its final year.
With the club continuing to build around manager Mikel Arteta, keeping an established goalkeeper could be an important part of maintaining consistency across the squad.
An improved contract could also help Arsenal protect their long-term investment in Raya, particularly if interest from Spanish clubs develops in the coming seasons. However, there is currently no confirmed transfer agreement or indication that the goalkeeper has formally requested a move.
Could Real Madrid Be an Option?
Raya’s childhood support for Real Madrid naturally adds another dimension to speculation about a possible return to Spanish football. Nevertheless, his admiration for the club should not be interpreted as evidence of an impending transfer.
For now, Arsenal remain his stated priority. Any future move would depend on several factors, including his contract situation, the club’s plans, potential interest from Spanish sides and Raya’s own career ambitions.
A return to Spain could eventually provide the goalkeeper with the opportunity to experience a different footballing environment while competing in a league he clearly admires.
The Bigger Picture
Raya’s comments offer Arsenal supporters a glimpse into his long-term ambitions without necessarily signalling an immediate change in direction. The goalkeeper appears settled in North London, but his desire to play in La Liga leaves the door open to a future chapter in Spanish football.
For Arsenal, the immediate focus will be on keeping one of their most important players happy and securing his future beyond his current contract.
Whether Raya eventually makes the move to Spain remains uncertain. For now, his message is straightforward: he is happy at Arsenal, but La Liga is an experience he would love to have one day.
