The reported early leaks surrounding the United States Men’s National Team squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have already sparked huge debate among fans, with Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Gio Reyna reportedly making the final roster while Real Salt Lake star Diego Luna has been left out.
The decision is expected to dominate conversations across American soccer circles ahead of the official squad announcement by head coach Mauricio Pochettino in New York.
Gio Reyna Earns Surprise World Cup Spot
Despite limited playing time in Germany this season, Reyna has reportedly done enough to convince Pochettino that he deserves a place on the plane to the World Cup.
The 23-year-old has endured another frustrating campaign in Europe, making only 19 league appearances and struggling for regular minutes at Borussia Monchengladbach. However, Pochettino has consistently praised the midfielder’s creativity and technical quality.
The Argentine manager previously described Reyna as a “special player,” and it appears that belief has now translated into a World Cup call-up.
While many supporters questioned whether his lack of minutes would hurt his chances, the coaching staff seemingly prioritized talent and attacking unpredictability over club form.
Diego Luna’s Omission Stuns Fans
The biggest surprise from the leaked squad is undoubtedly the absence of Diego Luna.
The Real Salt Lake midfielder had become one of the breakout stars of the Pochettino era and appeared to be building strong momentum toward a World Cup spot. Luna featured in 17 of the team’s 18 matches during 2025 and delivered several eye-catching performances.
His energy, creativity, and fearless style made him a fan favorite, with many believing he had already cemented his role in the squad.
Unfortunately for Luna, another major international disappointment has arrived after he was also left out of the United States Olympic squad back in 2024.
The midfielder has continued to shine in MLS this season with four goals and three assists for Real Salt Lake, making the reported decision even more controversial.
Other Names Included In The Squad
Several familiar names are also expected to feature in the USMNT squad.
Leeds United midfielder Brenden Aaronson reportedly returns after helping his club secure promotion, while goalkeeper Matt Turner and defender Mark McKenzie are also believed to have secured spots.
Sebastian Berhalter, son of former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter, has reportedly made the cut as well.
Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake youngster Zavier Gozo misses out despite an impressive MLS campaign that had placed him on the preliminary roster.
Pochettino Betting On Experience And Talent
The reported selections suggest that Pochettino is prioritizing proven quality and international experience as the United States prepares to host the biggest tournament in football alongside Mexico and Canada.
Reyna’s inclusion highlights the manager’s willingness to trust elite technical talent even when club minutes are limited. However, Luna’s omission could become one of the defining talking points leading into the tournament.
With the official announcement still pending, changes remain possible before the final deadline on June 1, especially if injuries arise.
Still, if these leaks prove accurate, Pochettino has already made several bold calls that could shape the future of the USMNT at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
