Manchester United Defender Patrick Dorgu Opens Up About His Faith and Nigerian Roots
Manchester United defender Patrick Dorgu has revealed the central role religion plays in his life, crediting his faith and Nigerian upbringing as powerful influences on his journey so far.
Born in Copenhagen to Nigerian parents, Dorgu’s full name, Chinazaekpere, means “God answers prayers” — a reflection of both his cultural and spiritual identity.
“Religion means a lot to me; it’s always been a big part of my life and my family’s,”
Dorgu told Manchester United’s official website.
“I’ve always been praying since I was young, and I keep praying.”
Faith, Family, and Football
The 19-year-old fullback, who has risen through the ranks to feature in United’s senior setup, explained that faith has remained a grounding force, especially amid the high-pressure environment of professional football.
“Family and the community are what I’ve grown up with in Denmark, so it’s good to try and maintain it here [in Manchester] too,” he added.
“I come to pray at this church on Sunday if I have the time and we don’t have a game. I try to be here as much as I can.”
While he doesn’t claim faith gives him a direct advantage on the pitch, Dorgu emphasized the importance of belief, purpose, and staying grounded.
“It’s about always believing — believing that God has a plan for me and for my career.
United is a massive club. I knew it would be a great opportunity, and I always think that God has a plan for everything.”
The Rise of Chinazaekpere
Dorgu, a technically gifted and athletic defender, is part of a new generation of United talents with multicultural backgrounds and deep personal convictions. His openness about faith is increasingly rare in elite sport but resonates with fans who value authenticity and humility.
His connection to his Nigerian heritage is also a point of pride. While born and raised in Denmark, he remains closely tied to Nigerian values of family, faith, and resilience.
What’s Next for Dorgu?
With promising performances at youth and senior level, Dorgu continues to develop under the spotlight at Old Trafford. Whether in Manchester, Copenhagen, or Lagos, one thing remains clear: he’s a player who knows where he comes from — and where he’s going.
✝️ “God has a plan for everything,” he says — and he’s walking that path, one prayer at a time.
