Cristiano Ronaldo is generating transfer speculation while at Al-Nassr, having gone on strike in the Saudi Pro League. Rumours suggest a sensational return to Manchester United for a third spell at Old Trafford, but the Red Devils’ stance on such a deal has now been revealed.
Why Ronaldo is frustrated at Al-Nassr
Despite earning one of the most lucrative contracts in world football—reportedly worth close to £500,000 per day—Ronaldo has grown frustrated in Saudi Arabia. He is reportedly unhappy with how funds are distributed among teams controlled by the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Ronaldo has sat out two fixtures for Al-Nassr, which the club won in his absence, and has faced criticism for attempting to exert too much influence in a league he has dominated since his move in 2023. The Saudi Pro League has made it clear that Ronaldo will not dictate proceedings on or off the field, with Al-Nassr controlling their own recruitment and finances.
Ronaldo’s release clause and future options
It has been reported that Ronaldo could leave in the summer of 2026, with a £44 million ($60m) release clause that could be triggered in the next transfer window. Even in the latter stages of his career, Ronaldo remains an attractive sporting and commercial asset for clubs worldwide.
Sky Sports reported that Ronaldo has “warned the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the Saudi Pro League of his intention to leave the kingdom if he doesn’t receive more sporting guarantees.” Despite the tensions, he retains strong support from fans in the Gulf, with banners bearing his iconic number seven displayed during matches he has missed.
Return to Man Utd or other options?
Speculation around Ronaldo’s next move continues. Suggestions include a return to Sporting CP, a reunion with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami in MLS, or a possible move elsewhere in Europe. Many Manchester United supporters would welcome him back, but Sky Sports claim that a return to Old Trafford is “firmly closed.”
According to reports, United have “no interest in bringing Ronaldo back for a third stint.” The club is focused on building for the future, and Ronaldo, at 41, would be considered a short-term solution. Even former teammates at Manchester United doubt such a deal could materialize.
