Jordan Henderson is set to become Chelsea’s latest signing after mutually terminating his contract with Brentford, paving the way for a surprise free transfer to Stamford Bridge.
The experienced midfielder leaves the Bees after just one season and is now expected to complete a two-year deal with the Blues.
Brentford officially confirmed Henderson’s departure after both parties agreed to end his contract with immediate effect, despite the midfielder still having a year remaining on his original agreement.
Chelsea have been searching for experienced leadership to complement their youthful squad, and Henderson has emerged as the club’s preferred choice.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the deal is effectively complete, posting on X:
“BREAKING: Jordan Henderson to Chelsea, here we go! Former Liverpool captain has agreed a two-year deal at Chelsea and will sign until June 2028 this week. Henderson left Brentford and Chelsea will now welcome him next.”
The move will see Henderson join Chelsea as a free agent, with no transfer fee required following his contract termination.
The former Liverpool captain made 34 appearances during his lone campaign with Brentford after returning to the Premier League from Ajax.
Reflecting on his departure, Henderson thanked the club for helping him return to England’s top flight.
“I leave Brentford with a lot of gratitude for the opportunity the club gave me, and for the support and care shown to me and my family from day one.
“Coming back to the Premier League was really important to me, and Brentford gave me that chance. I’ll always be thankful for that.”
Henderson also praised the club’s culture and the progress achieved during his time in west London.
“Brentford is a special football club. It’s ambitious, progressive and full of good people. From the owners and leadership, to the coaching staff, the players and everyone behind the scenes, it’s been a privilege to be part of it.”
The veteran midfielder reserved special praise for Brentford’s supporters, thanking them for the backing they provided throughout his spell at the Gtech Community Stadium.
“Most of all, I’d like to thank the supporters. Their backing never changed, and the connection they have with the club is clear to see.
“They care deeply about Brentford and they support the team in the right way every step of the journey.”
Henderson also expressed his appreciation to the coaching staff, club officials and teammates before bringing his Brentford chapter to an end.
Chelsea’s pursuit of Henderson reflects the club’s desire to add leadership and experience to a squad largely built around emerging talent.
If the deal is completed as expected, the former England captain will bring Premier League-winning pedigree, Champions League experience and proven leadership qualities to Enzo Maresca’s side as they prepare to compete on multiple fronts during the 2026-27 season.
