Former Tottenham Coach Reveals Bold Plan to Revive Nigerian Football

England-based Nigerian coach Demi Emmanuel Olutoge has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform Nigerian football, saying he is prepared to return home and coach in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to help drive meaningful change.

Olutoge believes Nigeria has an abundance of football talent but lacks the structures needed to develop players into world-class stars. According to him, the country’s football potential can only be fully realized through deliberate reforms and long-term planning.

The former forward, who played for Saffron Walden and in the Essex Senior League, said the domestic league must be restructured to become more competitive and attractive to players, fans, and investors.

“Nigeria is blessed with enormous football talent, but much more needs to be done to develop these players into world-class stars. Our league needs to be restructured with better wages, improved welfare packages, stronger television rights, and a more sustainable commercial model,” Olutoge said.

He also expressed concern over the level of support Nigerians give to European football clubs while the local league continues to struggle for attention and investment.

“It is painful to see Nigerians passionately supporting foreign clubs while our domestic league receives very little backing. Every jersey, cap, scarf, and match ticket purchased for foreign clubs adds to their revenue. If we channel even a portion of that passion and investment into our own league, it can become one of the strongest and most competitive leagues in Africa.”

Olutoge believes a thriving domestic league would have a far-reaching impact on Nigerian football, strengthening clubs and national teams alike.

“If we intentionally develop our league, Nigerian clubs can become African champions and eventually compete successfully at the FIFA Club World Cup. That success will create greater opportunities for players, coaches, and administrators while helping our national teams become dominant forces in Africa and on the global stage.”

The former Tottenham Hotspur youth coach said he has developed a football development model that can build a clear pathway from grassroots football to the senior national teams.

“I have a proven template that can help strengthen local clubs and build our national teams—from the U-17s and Flying Eagles to the U-23s and the Super Eagles. With the right structures and commitment, Nigeria can become one of the leading football nations in the world within the next 15 years.”

While expressing optimism about the future, Olutoge stressed that lasting success would require patience, commitment, and collective effort.

“Transformation will not happen overnight. It requires proper planning, consistency, and deliberate action. Countries with successful football systems have achieved their results through strong structures, and Nigeria has every opportunity to do the same if we embrace the right mindset.”

Olutoge brings a wealth of international coaching experience, having worked within the youth systems of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. He also holds a Master’s degree from the UCFB Etihad Campus in Manchester, where he specialized in football coaching and sports management.

With his experience and long-term vision, Olutoge believes Nigerian football can once again become a dominant force on the African continent and compete consistently with the world’s best.
