Chelsea Suffer Deadline-Day Shock as Monaco Pull Plug on £42m Lamine Camara Deal

Chelsea were left stunned on deadline day after Monaco reportedly pulled out of a completed £42 million agreement for midfielder Lamine Camara — just minutes before the transfer window closed.

The Senegal international was expected to move to Stamford Bridge after Chelsea reached a written agreement with Monaco.

Instead, the deal collapsed at the worst possible moment.

Monaco make dramatic U-turn

According to reports, Monaco reversed their decision on Tuesday, September 1, with the transfer window closing at 11pm.

Chelsea had reportedly completed the necessary paperwork for Camara’s £42m move, only for Monaco to withdraw from the agreement shortly before the deadline.

The decision has reportedly left Chelsea furious and without the midfielder they had identified as their preferred replacement for Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea needed Camara after Fernandez exit

The timing makes the collapse even more painful for Chelsea.

Fernandez completed his blockbuster move to Manchester City for a fee reportedly exceeding £120 million on deadline day, leaving Chelsea needing another midfielder to fill the void.

Camara had emerged as the club’s preferred solution.

The 22-year-old Senegal star was expected to bring energy, physicality and defensive quality to Chelsea’s midfield.

But with Monaco refusing to complete the deal, Chelsea were left with no time to find a replacement.

The Balogun twist

So why did Monaco change their mind?

The answer appears to be Folarin Balogun.

Monaco had agreed to sell the United States international to Everton for around £40 million on deadline day.

That deal provided Monaco with the financial boost they needed — and reportedly changed their thinking over Camara.

With their immediate financial requirements addressed by Balogun’s sale, Monaco no longer felt compelled to part with another important player.

The French club therefore chose to keep Camara and protect their midfield depth.

Chelsea left empty-handed

The late collapse leaves Chelsea in a difficult position.

They have lost one of their key midfielders, missed out on his intended replacement and have no opportunity to make another Premier League signing until the next transfer window.

For Camara, meanwhile, the dramatic deadline-day twist means he will remain in France.

One minute Chelsea appeared to have their replacement for Fernandez. Minutes later, the deal was gone.

Deadline day rarely gets more dramatic than that.
