Chido Obi Stars At Maurice Revello Tournament
Chido Obi continued his strong performance at the prestigious Maurice Revello Tournament with a goal in Denmark Under-20s’ group-stage victory over Japan on Tuesday.
The young Manchester United forward now has two goals and an assist in three games out in Toulon, in a competition where current and former Reds stars have shone before.
Alejandro Garnacho impressed for Argentina in the 2022 edition, while Matheus Cunha — for whom a deal has been agreed, subject to visa and registration — was Player of the Tournament in 2019. Back in 2014, Bruno Fernandes represented Portugal, while playing for Udinese.
Sekou Kone, meanwhile, performed well for Mali in this year’s group stages, before the African nation were unfortunately knocked out on goal difference.
Chido enjoyed a strong first season at United, making his first steps as a Red with the club’s Under-18s side, shortly after completing a move from Arsenal. He netted a hat-trick within 14 minutes of his first start before steady progress with the guidance of United’s Academy coaches.
Particularly notable performances included seven goals in three FA Youth Cup games, earning Obi a senior debut by mid-February, when he came off the bench to feature in our Premier League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.
He made a total of eight appearances by the season’s end, before travelling on the post-season tour to Asia, where he netted two goals in victory over Hong Kong, China.
This experience with Denmark is the final addition to an excellent season of development for the 17-year-old. Playing against opponents older than him, he made an assist in the opening game against Mexico — a 3-3 draw — before netting against both Congo and Japan.
Against the former, he wrapped up a 2-0 victory late on with a right-footed drive from outside the box. His goal against Japan was scruffier, but the result of good pressing in the opposition’s box. That opened the scoring in a 3-0 win.
Denmark will now play in the semi-finals against Saudi Arabia on Friday 13 June at 13:00 BST.
France and Mexico face off in the other semi-final.
