Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon Raise Barcelona Fatigue Concerns as International Break Takes Its Toll

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick could have a major workload problem on his hands when his international stars return to club duty, with Lamine Yamal, Anthony Gordon and Joao Cancelo among those who have played significant minutes during the extended break.

The unusually long international window is finally coming to an end, but Barcelona’s success on the international stage could come at a cost.

Several of Flick’s key players have been heavily involved for their respective countries, raising concerns over fatigue ahead of a demanding run of domestic fixtures.

With 10 Barcelona players still having international commitments to complete, Flick faces the difficult task of balancing momentum with player fitness.

Yamal Continues to Shine for Spain

Lamine Yamal has once again been one of the biggest stars of the international break.

The Barcelona teenager has started Spain’s first three matches and accumulated 203 minutes, contributing four goals and one assist in the process.

His performances have continued to underline his importance to both club and country.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has nevertheless attempted to keep the youngster’s workload under control, stating that no player would exceed 270 minutes across the four matches during the break.

De la Fuente also highlighted Yamal’s relentless desire to compete, describing his mentality as the “anxiety of the genius” who constantly wants to improve and be the best.

For Flick, however, every additional minute played by his teenage superstar will be closely monitored when he returns to Barcelona.

Gordon Has Been Unstoppable for England

Anthony Gordon has also enjoyed an impressive international window.

The England winger has become a regular starter under Thomas Tuchel, playing 218 minutes across three matches.

Even more impressive, Gordon has found the net in every game during the break, continuing the strong form that has made him an increasingly important player for the Three Lions.

His heavy involvement will be another factor Barcelona must consider as the club prepares for the next phase of the season.

Cancelo Has the Biggest Workload

While Yamal and Gordon have grabbed much of the attention, Joao Cancelo has accumulated the most minutes among Barcelona’s international players.

The Portugal defender has started all four of his country’s matches during the break, completing 305 minutes.

Cancelo has also contributed offensively, scoring against both Denmark and Norway.

His workload will be particularly important for Flick to monitor given the physical demands placed on full-backs throughout a season.

Pedri and Others Have Had More Rest

Not every Barcelona player has been pushed to the same extent.

Pedri has featured for 120 minutes, while Fermín López has played 80 minutes and Dani Olmo has accumulated 149.

In defence, Pau Cubarsí completed two full matches, while Jules Koundé has played just 90 minutes for France.

That variation gives Flick some room to rotate his squad once the players return to Barcelona.

Injury Concerns Add to Flick’s Headache

The international break has also produced a few physical concerns for Barcelona.

Eric García left Spain’s camp early after experiencing discomfort, while Raphinha returned from Brazil duty prematurely because of a muscle problem.

However, initial tests reportedly ruled out a serious injury for the Brazilian, providing some relief for Flick and the Barcelona medical team.

The club will nevertheless be keeping a close eye on the fitness of its returning stars.

Flick Faces a Difficult Balancing Act

International success is normally welcomed by any club manager, but the extended break has created a difficult situation for Flick.

Yamal’s goals, Gordon’s form and Cancelo’s consistency are positive developments, but the amount of football played by Barcelona’s stars could have consequences once the domestic season resumes.

Flick will now have to decide when to rest his most heavily used players without disrupting Barcelona’s momentum.

With a demanding schedule ahead, managing those minutes could prove just as important as tactical decisions on the pitch.
