Rio Ferdinand Slams Jorge Jesus Over Cristiano Ronaldo Treatment
Rio Ferdinand Slams Jorge Jesus Over Cristiano Ronaldo Treatment: “This Manager Thinks He Is Alex Ferguson”
Rio Ferdinand has strongly criticised Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus over his handling of Cristiano Ronaldo, arguing that the legendary forward was treated with a lack of respect during the latest international break.
The former Manchester United defender believes Jesus made a serious mistake by leaving Ronaldo on the bench after asking him to warm up during Portugal’s Nations League clash with Norway.
Ronaldo Left Frustrated on the Bench
Tensions reportedly escalated when Ronaldo was instructed to warm up with the expectation that he would enter the game during the final stages.
However, Jesus ultimately decided against introducing the 41-year-old forward, leaving Ronaldo visibly frustrated on the bench.
The decision immediately generated debate around Ronaldo’s position within the Portugal setup and whether the veteran superstar remains central to Jesus’ plans.
Jesus reportedly pointed to tactical considerations for his decision, but that explanation has done little to calm the situation.
Ferdinand Defends His Former Manchester United Teammate
Ferdinand, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United between 2003 and 2009, has now come to the forward’s defence.
Speaking on his Rio Presents podcast, Ferdinand questioned Jesus’ management of the situation and argued that Ronaldo deserved greater respect given his contribution to Portuguese and world football.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was put in a very bad situation and was treated in an inappropriate way.”
Ferdinand went further, questioning whether Jesus had earned the authority to handle a player of Ronaldo’s stature in such a manner.
“This manager thinks he is Alex Ferguson or Pep Guardiola.”
The former England international added that he could not understand why Jesus had chosen to handle the situation publicly in that manner.
“He Should Have Shown Cristiano Ronaldo the Respect He Deserved”
For Ferdinand, the issue goes beyond a simple tactical decision.
The former defender believes the situation demonstrates a failure of man-management, particularly when dealing with one of the most influential players in football history.
Ronaldo has spent more than two decades at the highest level of international football and remains Portugal’s most recognisable footballing figure.
That status, according to Ferdinand, should have been taken into consideration when Jesus managed the situation.
Ferdinand Warns Jesus Could Pay the Price
Ferdinand also suggested that the fallout could eventually have consequences for Jesus’ position as Portugal manager.
He argued that the coach should acknowledge that he mishandled the situation and apologise to Ronaldo.
“The coach must come to ask for forgiveness… otherwise he will end up being fired.”
Ferdinand believes Jesus needs to publicly accept responsibility and admit that he misjudged the situation.
What Does This Mean for Portugal?
The controversy creates another storyline for Portugal’s national team as attention turns to the relationship between its manager and its most famous player.
From a sporting and marketing perspective, the situation is particularly significant. Ronaldo remains one of the biggest global names in football, with enormous commercial influence and a worldwide fanbase.
Any public disagreement involving the five-time Ballon d’Or winner therefore has the potential to generate significant media attention, social-media engagement and commercial discussion around the Portuguese national team.
The key question now is whether Jesus can repair his relationship with Ronaldo and maintain harmony within the squad—or whether this disagreement will develop into a much bigger problem for Portugal.
For now, the spotlight remains firmly on Jorge Jesus and Cristiano Ronaldo.
