Javier Tebas Slams Real Madrid TV Over Negreira Case Claims

Javier Tebas has criticised Real Madrid TV's coverage of the Negreira case.

‘That’s an Outrage!’ – Javier Tebas Hits Back at Real Madrid TV Over Negreira Case Claims

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has launched a fierce response to Real Madrid TV, accusing the club’s official channel of pushing a misleading narrative about the Negreira case and Spanish refereeing.

The long-running controversy involving Barcelona and former Spanish refereeing official José María Enríquez Negreira remains one of the most contentious issues in Spanish football.

While Tebas has repeatedly stressed that the allegations surrounding the case are serious and deserve a full investigation, he strongly rejected suggestions that the alleged influence is still affecting refereeing decisions in Spain today.

Tebas Slams Real Madrid TV Coverage

Real Madrid TV has continued to produce content questioning the integrity of Spanish refereeing and highlighting the Negreira case.

Tebas believes the club channel has gone too far by presenting the controversy as though the alleged refereeing influence remains active in 2026.

The LaLiga chief insisted there is an important distinction between investigating historical allegations and claiming that the same alleged influence is still operating today.

“I still hold the exact same view regarding the Negreira case: what happened was extremely serious and must be investigated to the very end.”

However, Tebas was far more forceful when addressing claims about the current state of Spanish refereeing.

“It’s one thing to investigate facts that ended years ago and quite another to build the narrative in 2026 that Negreira is still influencing Spanish refereeing today. That’s an outrage. And repeating it from Real Madrid TV doesn’t make it true.”

What Is the Negreira Case?

The Negreira case centres on payments made by Barcelona to companies linked to José María Enríquez Negreira, a former vice-president of Spain’s refereeing technical committee.

The payments have triggered a major investigation into whether they were intended to influence refereeing decisions or appointments.

Barcelona have denied wrongdoing and have maintained that the payments were for technical reports and refereeing-related advice.

The case has nevertheless continued to generate intense debate, particularly between Barcelona and Real Madrid, whose rivalry extends well beyond the pitch.

Tebas: Let the Courts Decide

With the investigation still in the hands of Spain’s judicial system, Tebas argued that the legal process should be allowed to run its course rather than being replaced by public accusations or sporting punishment.

The LaLiga president questioned what critics expect the league to do while the courts are still examining the evidence.

“Let the judges investigate, let all evidence be examined, and let the matter be pursued to its conclusion.”

He continued:

“But in the meantime, what do some people want? Do they want FC Barcelona and its current leadership removed from LALIGA entirely? Do they want LALIGA to usurp the courts, hand down its own verdict, and enforce a penalty before a judicial ruling even exists?”

Real Madrid-Barcelona Rivalry Adds Fuel

The dispute comes against the backdrop of one of football’s fiercest rivalries.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have repeatedly clashed over refereeing, institutional decisions and the wider governance of Spanish football.

The Negreira investigation has added another layer to that tension, with Real Madrid among the strongest voices demanding scrutiny of the allegations.

Tebas, meanwhile, appears determined to draw a line between legitimate criticism of the historical case and claims that the alleged influence remains part of Spanish refereeing today.

With the judicial process continuing, the controversy is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
