Lionel Scaloni Reveals Argentina Struggled With Nerves During Messi Farewell
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has revealed that his players struggled to control their emotions during Lionel Messi’s final appearance for the national team, admitting the occasion affected their performance during the opening half of the victory over Benin.
Argentina secured a 3-0 win over Benin, but the result was ultimately secondary to the historic significance of the occasion.
The match marked the end of Messi’s extraordinary international career, bringing an emotional conclusion to a chapter that included a World Cup triumph, Copa América success and numerous historic moments in the famous blue and white shirt.
Argentina Players Were Overwhelmed by the Occasion
Scaloni admitted that the emotional weight surrounding Messi’s farewell made it difficult for his players to perform normally.
The Argentina boss explained that his players were so determined to give their captain the perfect send-off that they became nervous and struggled to make the right decisions during the opening half.
“Everything was very emotional and in the first half the teammates themselves did not know which play to choose. They were nervous because it was a special night.”
According to Scaloni, the players’ emotions were understandable.
They were not simply playing another international friendly. They were sharing the pitch with Messi for what would reportedly be the final time in an Argentina shirt.
“It is not easy for the teammate who wants him to leave in the best way.”
The situation created a unique emotional pressure, with the entire squad wanting Messi to have the farewell he deserved.
Scaloni Struggled to Hold Back the Tears
The emotions were not limited to the players.
Scaloni was visibly moved during the national anthem, with the Argentina manager appearing close to tears as the significance of the occasion became clear.
The relationship between Scaloni and Messi has become one of the defining partnerships in modern international football.
Under Scaloni’s management, Argentina transformed their fortunes on the international stage, winning the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América.
Messi was at the centre of all three triumphs.
For Scaloni, therefore, coaching Messi was more than simply managing one of football’s greatest players—it was the fulfilment of a dream.
“For me it was a dream to manage him.”
Scaloni described Messi as “the best footballer in history”, while expressing his gratitude for everything the captain had given to Argentina.
“Having the Best Player on Your Side Is Impossible to Understand”
While Argentina have an exciting generation of young players capable of carrying the national team into the future, Scaloni believes replacing Messi’s influence will be impossible.
The manager highlighted something beyond goals, assists and tactical influence: Messi’s aura.
Scaloni believes the psychological impact of having Messi on the pitch is something that cannot simply be replicated by another player.
“The feeling of having the best player on your side is something impossible to understand.”
He added:
“We can put together a great team, but I’ve never seen that aura in anyone else.”
That statement underlines the enormous challenge facing Argentina as they prepare for life after their greatest-ever player.
The End of an Extraordinary Argentina Era
Messi’s international career has been defined by both heartbreak and historic success.
After years of criticism following defeats in major finals, the forward eventually led Argentina to a period of unprecedented success.
The Copa América triumph in 2021 ended Argentina’s long wait for a major international trophy, before Messi finally achieved World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022.
Another Copa América title followed in 2024.
His final appearance against Benin therefore represented more than the end of a player’s international career—it marked the closing of one of the most successful eras in Argentine football history.
Argentina Must Now Build Without Messi
Argentina now face the difficult task of developing a future without the player who has been at the centre of their footballing identity for more than a decade.
Scaloni has already shown that he is capable of building a competitive team around a new generation of players.
However, even the manager acknowledges that Messi’s unique presence cannot simply be replaced.
The next generation may eventually create its own legacy, but the emotional and sporting impact of Messi’s presence will remain difficult to reproduce.
For Argentina, the challenge is no longer about finding another Messi.
It is about creating a new identity while preserving the standards established during the Messi era.
The final whistle against Benin may have marked the end of Messi’s Argentina career, but his influence on the national team—and on Argentine football—will continue for generations.
