Micky van de Ven hails Tottenham’s ‘new ambition’ after major transfer overhaul under Roberto De Zerbi

Micky van de Ven believes Tottenham have entered a new era after the club backed Roberto De Zerbi with a record-breaking summer spending spree, insisting the fresh ambition has given the squad renewed belief ahead of the new campaign.

The Dutch defender also praised the Italian manager’s energetic approach, claiming his passion and attacking philosophy have transformed the atmosphere around the club following an “unacceptable” 2025-26 season.

A fresh start after difficult campaign

Tottenham endured another turbulent season, finishing just above the relegation zone after a campaign that fell well below expectations.

Van de Ven admitted the squad were left mentally drained by the disappointing campaign but believes the club’s activity in the transfer market demonstrates a renewed commitment to competing at the highest level.

Speaking during Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Australia, he told BBC Sport:

“It’s really good that you can see the club has made some changes. You can see the club has a new ambition.

“It’s something that’s really important for players who have been here for a long time. Last season was a stressful season, unacceptable from our side, so to leave all of that behind and go into the new season fresh means a lot.”

De Zerbi bringing a new identity

Since taking charge in March, De Zerbi has quickly begun implementing his trademark possession-based style, encouraging Tottenham to play with greater confidence and attacking intent.

Van de Ven believes the tactical shift has already lifted morale within the squad.

“It’s going to be different compared to the manager we had last season,” he explained.

“It’s going to be more with the ball, more about playing football. I think it’s also going to be more enjoyable for people to watch because we’ll be playing offensive football.

“You can see he has brought a lot of passion into our group, a lot in terms of mentality and passion on the pitch. It is something we needed because everybody was a little bit down.”

The defender added that having a full pre-season under De Zerbi has allowed the squad to properly understand the new tactical demands.

“He brings a lot of good energy and, from pre-season, we have really had the time to bring his football into the team. That’s really enjoyable.”

Tottenham break transfer records

The north London club have matched their managerial appointment with unprecedented investment in the squad.

Tottenham shattered their transfer record twice within 48 hours, first signing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million before completing a blockbuster £100 million move for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

Those arrivals have been complemented by the £52 million signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, while experienced free agents Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka have also strengthened De Zerbi’s squad.

New signings settle quickly

Van de Ven revealed that the new arrivals have integrated seamlessly into the dressing room, helping create a positive environment during Tottenham’s preparations for the new season.

“The feeling of the team is really good, to be honest,” he said.

“I have really enjoyed working with him. That’s what we have been doing in this pre-season, and the guys who are coming in have been unbelievable as well. They have fit in well to the group.”

With significant investment, a fresh tactical identity and renewed optimism throughout the squad, Tottenham will hope the upcoming campaign marks the beginning of a return to competing near the top of the Premier League after two hugely disappointing seasons.
