From Setbacks to a Fresh Start: Akekoromowei Begins Benfica Adventure with No. 24 Jersey
For Nigerian teenage striker Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei, the journey to one of Europe’s biggest women’s football clubs has been anything but straightforward.
Just months after her dream move abroad appeared to be slipping away amid injury concerns, a stalled transfer to Barcelona and a passport controversy that dominated headlines, the talented forward has finally turned the page.
Akekoromowei has officially begun life at Portuguese champions SL Benfica Feminino, taking part in her first training session with the club after completing a long-term move from Lagos-based Hallelujah FC Ladies. The deal will keep the promising Nigerian at Benfica until 2028.
In another significant milestone, the club presented the teenager with the No. 24 jersey, a symbolic start to what she hopes will be a successful career in European football.
The first day at Benfica’s training ground was more than just another session for the youngster. It marked the beginning of a new chapter after months of uncertainty and resilience.
Speaking after meeting her coaches and teammates, Akekoromowei expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to repay the club’s faith in her with hard work and commitment.
“I am back, better and ready to give my best to the best team in the world, Benfica. Training was good today. I met the coaches and my teammates, and it is a great privilege to begin a new chapter of my life here,” she said.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s brightest emerging talents in women’s football, Akekoromowei now has the opportunity to continue her development at one of Europe’s most successful clubs. Her move to Benfica not only represents a personal triumph over adversity but also highlights the growing recognition of Nigerian female footballers on the global stage.
With pre-season preparations underway, the teenager will be eager to impress the Benfica coaching crew as she seeks to establish herself in a squad renowned for competing at the highest level in domestic and European football.
For Akekoromowei, the road to Portugal has been defined by patience, perseverance and resilience. Now wearing the famous red of Benfica and the No. 24 shirt, she has the platform to transform a story of setbacks into one of success.
