‘One Second Is Too Late!’ – Sergino Dest Benched For Disciplinary Breach As Peter Bosz Sends Ruthless Message After PSV’s 6-2 Rout Of Napoli
There’s being late, and then there’s being Sergino Dest-late — at least according to PSV manager Peter Bosz, who benched the U.S. international for showing up behind schedule before their stunning 6-2 Champions League victory over Napoli.
The message from Bosz? Crystal clear: discipline is non-negotiable.
Dest’s Missed Moment
Dest was expected to start the match after featuring in the pre-game press conference alongside Bosz, speaking passionately about facing the Italian champions.
“For these matches you want to become a professional footballer,” Dest said before the game. “You have to show character and put pressure on. Napoli are a great team, but we can take them out of their game.”
Unfortunately for the U.S. star, his words didn’t translate into a starting role. When the lineups were announced, Dest’s name was missing from the XI. He only made a brief six-minute appearance late in the match — long after PSV had wrapped up their emphatic win.
Bosz Explains The Brutal Decision
After the match, Bosz didn’t sugarcoat it. Speaking to Ziggo Sports, he said:
“Sergino was late, so you don’t play. It wasn’t a difficult decision. We made agreements — everyone has to stick to them. For me, one second is too late, but it was much more. You can just be on time, come on.”
The Dutch coach made it clear that standards at PSV extend beyond the pitch.
“This happens at every club; we set the bar high in everything, including discipline. If you don’t, everyone knows the consequences. I never considered making a different decision for a second.”
Ruthless Bosz Stays Consistent
This isn’t the first time Bosz has shown his strict side. Earlier this season, Malik Tillman, another USMNT player, was left out after missing a morning meeting. Tillman later admitted to oversleeping and promised to learn from it.
Bosz’s firm stance mirrors that of other top European managers like Hansi Flick, who has benched big names such as Jules Kounde and Marcus Rashford for tardiness. For Bosz, discipline is part of the winning culture he’s building at PSV — a mindset that’s paying off, given their blistering form in both the Eredivisie and Europe.
Lesson Learned For Dest?
Dest, who has been a regular starter this season, will likely bounce back quickly. But the message has been delivered loud and clear: time waits for no one at PSV — not even for Champions League stars.
