World Cup 2026

‘Can still help us a lot!’ – Lucas Paqueta thrilled by Neymar’s return to Brazil training ahead of crucial World Cup clash with Scotland

Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta has welcomed Neymar’s return to full training as the Selecao prepare for a crucial World Cup showdown against Scotland.

The Santos forward has yet to feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a calf injury before the tournament, but his latest appearance on the training pitch has boosted hopes that he could soon return to action.

Neymar closes in on comeback

Neymar has missed Brazil’s opening two Group C matches, sitting out both the 1-1 draw against Morocco and the comfortable 3-0 victory over Haiti.

However, the 34-year-old’s return to training has lifted spirits inside the Brazilian camp as Dorival Junior’s side target top spot in the group.

Speaking to reporters, Paqueta highlighted the importance of Neymar’s presence both on and off the pitch.

“We’re all very happy to see him training and back on the pitch with us,” Paqueta said.

“Neymar is a very important player for the Brazilian national team. He has an extraordinary history with this shirt and he can still help us a lot. We’re glad he’s back and we hope he’ll be available as soon as possible to contribute to the team.”

Brazil continue without Raphinha

While Neymar’s recovery offers optimism, Brazil remain without another key attacking star.

Barcelona winger Raphinha is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving questions over whether he will play another part in the tournament.

Paqueta revealed the squad has rallied around the former Leeds United forward as he works his way back to fitness.

“Right now he has the support of the whole group,” Paqueta explained.

“We’re by his side and we’ll do everything we can to help him during his recovery. He’s a guy who works really hard and I’m sure he’ll do everything possible to come back as soon as he can.

“As for his importance, there’s not much more to add. He’s coming off some extraordinary seasons and has grown a lot with the national team as well.”

Scotland remain a serious threat

Brazil may be among the favourites to lift the World Cup, but Paqueta insists there will be no underestimating Scotland in Miami.

Steve Clarke’s side still have a realistic chance of reaching the knockout stages and know a positive result against the five-time world champions could secure a historic qualification.

Paqueta stressed that every opponent at the tournament deserves respect.

“All the teams at the World Cup deserve respect,” he said.

“You have to study them and prepare as best as possible to face them.

“We have great respect for Scotland, but we also know we need to play our game and follow what the coach asks of us. Regardless of the opponent, our goal in every match is to win.”

Brazil targeting top spot

With qualification still not mathematically secured, Brazil know victory against Scotland would guarantee progression and likely secure first place in Group C.

The possible return of Neymar would provide a major boost as the Selecao look to build momentum heading into the knockout rounds and strengthen their bid for a record-extending sixth World Cup title.
