*Nigeria Pitch Awards Celebrate The Stars, Stories And People Shaping The Nation’s Football

There are days when football is not just about goals, trophies or statistics. There are nights when the game pauses to celebrate the people who give it meaning.

Tuesday was one of such days in Lagos.

At the Ibis Hotel in Ikeja, Nigerian football’s finest gathered as the Nigeria Pitch Awards turned the spotlight on the men and women whose performances, commitment and contributions helped shape the 2025 football season.

At the centre of the celebration were Victor Osimhen and Rasheedat Ajibade, who emerged as the King and Queen of the Pitch respectively.

For Osimhen, the honour was another recognition of a remarkable football journey that has seen him establish himself among Nigeria’s leading football stars. The Galatasaray striker beat Ademola Lookman and Calvin Bassey to claim the coveted King of the Pitch award.

Ajibade, meanwhile, underlined the growing influence of Nigerian women in the global game. The Paris Saint-Germain Féminine star defeated Esther Okoronkwo and Chiamaka Nnadozie to become Queen of the Pitch.

It was, however, more than a night for the two headline winners.

It was a night that celebrated the depth of Nigerian football talent.

Osimhen returned to the stage for a second major honour, winning the Rashidi Yekini Award for Best Striker of the Year ahead of Lookman and Anas Yusuf of Nasarawa United.

The goalkeeper’s department also produced a worthy winner as Stanley Nwabali claimed the Goalkeeper of the Year award, beating Maduka Okoye and Kayode Bankole.

At the heart of defence, Calvin Bassey took the Defender of the Year prize, edging Ola Aina and Benjamin Frederick.

The awards also recognised the tactical minds behind the stars.

Justine Madugu, former head coach of the Super Falcons, was named Coach of the Year after beating Daniel Ogunmodede and Finidi George, while Remo Stars walked away with the Team of the Year award.

In midfield, Alex Iwobi added another milestone to an increasingly decorated career, winning the Midfielder of the Year award ahead of Frank Onyeka, Raphael Onyedika and Wilfred Ndidi.

Beyond the Football Pitch

But perhaps the most significant message from the evening was that football’s impact goes far beyond what happens between the white lines.

The Samuel Okwaraji Award was presented to Hon. Kunle Soname, founder of Bet9ja, while he also received the Sportsmanship Award ahead of Bukola Olopade and former Nigeria National League chairman George Aluo.

The organisers also acknowledged individuals and institutions whose contributions to the wider football ecosystem have not gone unnoticed.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) received Special Recognition Awards.

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno was honoured as Football-Friendly Governor of the Year, recognising his support for the development of the sport.

For organiser Lender Consult International Limited, the ceremony was not simply about announcing winners.

It was a celebration of an entire football community — the players who produce the magic, coaches who build the teams, administrators who keep the machinery moving, stakeholders who invest in the game and journalists who tell its stories.

That perhaps explains the enduring relevance of the Nigeria Pitch Awards.

In a football culture often dominated by trophies and results, the awards provide an opportunity to stop, look beyond the scoreline and acknowledge the people whose collective efforts keep Nigerian football alive.

And on this particular day, Osimhen and Ajibade had the brightest lights shining on them.

King and Queen of the Pitch.

But the celebration belonged to Nigerian football.
