Jean-Philippe Mateta in action for Crystal Palace during a Premier League match
Juventus have revived their interest in Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta as they look to add more physicality to their attack.
The Serie A giants are searching for a powerful centre-forward to lead the line under new manager Luciano Spalletti, and Mateta has once again emerged as a serious option.
However, there is one major obstacle standing in the way.
According to reports from Italy, Juventus have reopened talks around Mateta as sporting director Frederic Massara continues to assess attacking options.
The French striker fits the profile Juventus are looking for — a strong, direct forward capable of holding up the ball, competing physically with defenders and providing a focal point in the final third.
Mateta is under contract with Crystal Palace until June 2027, but his future has become less certain following the managerial changes at Selhurst Park.
That uncertainty could encourage Juventus to make a move.
Despite their interest, Juventus cannot simply push ahead with a deal.
The club’s pursuit of Mateta is reportedly dependent on Jonathan David leaving Turin.
The Canadian forward’s departure would free up space in Juventus’ squad and create room financially for the club to bring in another striker.
Until David’s situation is resolved, Mateta may have to remain on Juventus’ shortlist rather than becoming their next signing.
Mateta isn’t the only striker being considered.
Juventus are also monitoring alternative attacking targets as Massara attempts to find the right combination of quality, physical presence and financial value.
Among the names being watched are Joshua Zirkzee and Nottingham Forest’s Arnaud Kalimuendo.
Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade has also attracted attention around Serie A, with Napoli among the clubs monitoring the German forward.
For now, however, Mateta remains one of the most intriguing options.
If Jonathan David leaves Juventus, could Jean-Philippe Mateta be the man Spalletti wants to lead the Bianconeri’s attack?
The answer could depend on what happens in Turin in the final stages of the transfer window.
