Benfica have officially announced Marco Silva as their new head coach after Jose Mourinho departed the club to complete a dramatic return to Real Madrid.
The Portuguese giants moved quickly to secure Silva’s signature following Mourinho’s exit, ushering in a new chapter at the Estadio da Luz ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Silva arrives in Lisbon after ending a highly respected five-year tenure with Fulham, where he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable managers.
The 48-year-old left Craven Cottage following the expiration of his contract and has now agreed to take charge of Benfica on a deal running until the summer of 2028, with an option to extend for a further year.
Benfica confirmed the agreement in an official statement, bringing one of Portugal’s most highly regarded coaches back to his homeland.
Silva built his managerial reputation through spells with Hull City, Watford and Everton before guiding Fulham through a sustained period of stability and success in English football.
Silva’s appointment comes as Mourinho officially brings an end to his second spell with Benfica.
Real Madrid activated the veteran manager’s €15 million (£13m) release clause after identifying him as the ideal candidate to lead the club into a new era.
Despite only taking charge in September, Mourinho leaves Benfica having overseen an impressive campaign. Under his guidance, the Lisbon side finished third in the Primeira Liga and remarkably remained unbeaten throughout the league season.
Benfica confirmed the circumstances surrounding his departure in a statement.
“Real Madrid CF formalized its intention to hire coach José Mourinho for the amount of €15,000,000, corresponding to the termination clause of his current sports employment contract, and the coach has given his agreement to this hiring.”
“Thus ended José Mourinho’s second spell as manager of SL Benfica’s professional football team. Sport Lisboa e Benfica wishes José Mourinho all the best.”
Mourinho now returns to a club where he previously enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his managerial career.
During his first spell at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, he won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup while ending Barcelona’s dominance of Spanish football.
The move represents another high-profile chapter in the career of one of the sport’s most decorated managers as he looks to restore Real Madrid to the summit of European football.
To pave the way for Mourinho’s arrival, Real Madrid confirmed the departure of head coach Alvaro Arbeloa earlier this week.
The club paid tribute to the former defender in an official statement, thanking him for his service and commitment throughout his time at the Santiago Bernabeu.
“Real Madrid CF and Álvaro Arbeloa have reached an agreement to end his time as first-team coach,” the statement read.
“Real Madrid is deeply grateful to Álvaro Arbeloa, who throughout his time at the club has consistently demonstrated loyalty, commitment and professionalism. He exemplifies the values of our club.”
With Mourinho returning to Madrid and Silva taking charge in Lisbon, two of European football’s biggest clubs are preparing for significant new eras on and off the pitch.
