Jadon Sancho officially leaves Manchester United after disappointing five-year spell at Old Trafford

Manchester United have officially confirmed the departure of Jadon Sancho after the winger’s contract expired, bringing an end to a turbulent five-year spell at Old Trafford.

The England international arrived from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 amid huge expectations, but struggled to consistently reproduce the form that made him one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents.

Manchester United confirm Sancho exit

United announced Sancho’s departure as part of their retained and released list submitted to the Premier League ahead of the new season.

The 26-year-old leaves the club after making 83 appearances, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists across all competitions. His time in Manchester was disrupted by inconsistent performances, managerial disputes and several loan moves away from the club.

Sancho spent periods back at Borussia Dortmund, as well as spells with Chelsea and Aston Villa, but ultimately failed to establish himself as a long-term success at Old Trafford.

In a brief statement, United said:

“Everyone at the club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon for their contributions to Manchester United and wish them the very best of luck for the future.”

A transfer that never lived up to expectations

Sancho’s departure closes the chapter on one of the club’s most disappointing modern-era signings.

Former United striker Louis Saha recently labelled the winger “the most disappointing signing in Manchester United history,” citing the enormous potential he displayed in Germany before his move to England.

Saha said:

“The level he had shown at Borussia Dortmund before joining, he showed so much promise because he is an enormous talent. It felt like a mystery.”

The former French international also expressed regret that Sancho was unable to maximise his opportunities at the club despite possessing undeniable ability.

Dortmund reunion remains a possibility

Although his Premier League career has stalled, Sancho continues to retain admirers in Germany.

Reports suggest Borussia Dortmund are exploring the possibility of bringing the winger back to Signal Iduna Park for a third spell. Head coach Niko Kovac is believed to be supportive of a move as the Bundesliga side looks to strengthen its attacking options.

Sancho enjoyed the most productive period of his career at Dortmund, registering 114 goal involvements in 137 appearances during his first stint with the club.

He also returned on loan in 2024 and played a key role in helping Dortmund reach the Champions League final.

What comes next?

At 26, Sancho still has time to revive his career, but his next move could prove crucial.

A return to familiar surroundings in Germany may offer the ideal environment for the winger to rediscover his confidence and consistency. Should he recapture the form that once made him one of Europe’s brightest stars, a return to the England setup could also become a realistic target.

For now, however, his Manchester United chapter is officially over.
