The possible return of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid is quickly becoming one of the biggest stories in European football. While reports suggest that a verbal agreement is already in place between the Portuguese tactician and the Spanish giants, several unexpected complications have slowed down the official announcement.
Fans at the Santiago Bernabeu were expecting confirmation weeks ago, but behind the scenes, political tension, financial complications, and squad planning have all combined to delay Mourinho’s sensational comeback.
One of the biggest reasons behind the delay is the growing political drama inside Real Madrid. According to reports from Spain, the club is preparing for its first seriously contested presidential election since 2006.
Long-time president Florentino Perez is reportedly facing competition from businessman Enrique Riquelme, creating uncertainty around several key decisions at the club.
Rather than rushing into a managerial announcement, Perez is believed to be fully focused on securing another mandate before finalizing a new era in the dugout. Mourinho’s appointment could even become a major part of his campaign strategy, especially considering the Special One’s popularity among sections of the Madrid fanbase.
For now, the election process has temporarily placed football matters on hold.
Another major obstacle involves Benfica and Mourinho’s existing contract situation.
Reports claim that Real Madrid previously had the chance to activate a €7 million release clause that would have allowed them to bring Mourinho back relatively easily. However, that clause reportedly expired on May 26 before the Spanish club could officially complete the process.
That development has significantly complicated negotiations.
Benfica are now in a much stronger bargaining position and can demand fresh terms directly from Madrid. Recent tensions between the two clubs over transfer dealings have reportedly made negotiations even more difficult.
As a result, what was expected to be a straightforward managerial appointment has turned into a more expensive and politically sensitive operation.
Despite the delay, Mourinho is reportedly already preparing for life back at the Bernabeu.
The veteran coach is said to have identified several transfer targets as he plans a major rebuild ahead of the new season. One of the names heavily linked is Morten Hjulmand, with the Sporting CP midfielder viewed as a perfect fit for Mourinho’s midfield structure.
There are also rumors surrounding a potential move for Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona. Mourinho previously worked with Rashford at Manchester United and reportedly remains a huge admirer of the England international.
In addition, club legend Toni Kroos could reportedly be offered a role within Mourinho’s coaching setup as part of a wider restructuring plan.
Even with the delays, optimism remains extremely high among Real Madrid supporters.
Mourinho remains one of the most iconic managers in the club’s modern history after delivering a La Liga title against Pep Guardiola’s dominant Barcelona side during his first spell in Spain. His intensity, charisma, and winning mentality still resonate strongly with many fans.
Now, with Real Madrid searching for another dominant era, many believe Mourinho could be the man to restore that ruthless competitive edge once again.
The official announcement may be taking longer than expected, but all signs still point toward the Special One making a dramatic return to the Bernabeu.
