Bruno Fernandes Accuses Roy Keane Of ‘Lying’ After Manchester United Legend’s Harsh Criticism

The tension between Bruno Fernandes and Roy Keane has exploded into the spotlight after the Manchester United captain publicly accused the former club legend of “lying” over comments made during a recent television appearance.

The heated exchange comes after Keane criticised Fernandes for allegedly focusing more on breaking the Premier League assist record than helping Manchester United win matches during the closing weeks of the season.

Roy Keane’s Explosive Criticism

Speaking on The Overlap, Keane did not hold back while discussing Fernandes’ performances and post-match comments following United’s victory over Nottingham Forest.

The former United captain questioned Fernandes’ mentality and suggested the Portuguese midfielder had become too focused on individual statistics rather than team objectives.

Keane claimed he was “raging” at the way the narrative surrounding Fernandes’ assists record dominated conversations after the match. According to Keane, a Manchester United captain should always prioritize victories over personal achievements.

The comments quickly sparked debate among fans and pundits, with many divided over whether the criticism was fair or overly harsh.

Fernandes Fires Back

Fernandes has now responded strongly to those accusations during an appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast with Steven Bartlett.

The Portuguese playmaker insisted that Keane completely misrepresented what he actually said in his post-match interview and accused the United legend of spreading false information.

Fernandes explained that his real comments had been taken out of context. Rather than admitting he ignored scoring chances to chase assists, Fernandes actually stated that there were moments when he probably should have passed instead of shooting.

The United captain made it clear that criticism does not bother him, but false accusations cross the line.

He said he was especially frustrated because Keane’s comments painted him as a selfish player obsessed with personal milestones, something Fernandes strongly rejects.

Record-Breaking Season Continues

Despite the controversy, Fernandes continued producing on the pitch.

The midfielder eventually broke the Premier League single-season assist record outright by registering his 21st assist during a 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

That achievement saw him move ahead of legendary names like Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, further cementing his place among the league’s elite creators.

Fernandes also capped off the campaign by helping Manchester United secure a return to the Champions League while collecting the Premier League Player of the Season award.

A Divided Debate Among Fans

The clash between Fernandes and Keane has created major discussion among Manchester United supporters.

Some fans agree with Keane’s old-school mentality and believe United captains should never discuss personal records publicly. Others feel Fernandes has been unfairly targeted despite carrying the team creatively for much of the season.

What cannot be denied, however, is Fernandes’ importance to the club. His creativity, leadership, and consistency were central to United’s success this year, even if debates around his style and mentality continue.

For now, the disagreement has added another fiery chapter to Manchester United’s long history of strong personalities and outspoken opinions.
