Manchester United may finally be ready to fix one of their biggest problems — the midfield battle.
The Red Devils are reportedly on the verge of sealing a blockbuster £43 million move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, with the Brazilian now heavily tipped to become the first major signing of the summer at Old Trafford.
After being linked with United for months, negotiations appear to have accelerated rapidly, and all signs now point toward the 26-year-old heading to the Premier League.
Italian reports claim the deal is “almost closed”, with Manchester United prepared to pay more than €50 million including bonuses to secure the Brazilian powerhouse. For a club desperate to regain dominance both domestically and in Europe, this transfer could prove massive.
And perhaps the biggest clue arrived directly from Atalanta manager Raffaele Palladino.
Speaking after Atalanta’s final Serie A game against Fiorentina, Palladino admitted Ederson was left out because of “concrete negotiations with a top club”.
That statement immediately sent Manchester United fans into overdrive.
Although Palladino avoided mentioning United by name, the timing and growing reports from Italy strongly suggest the midfielder is heading to Carrington.
Ederson has quietly become one of the most complete midfielders in Serie A over the last two seasons. Strong in tackles, relentless with his pressing, technically secure on the ball, and capable of driving forward under pressure, he brings exactly the type of energy United’s midfield has lacked.
His arrival could also completely reshape the tactical identity of the team.
New permanent manager Michael Carrick reportedly views Ederson as a perfect fit for his high-intensity system. Carrick wants a midfield capable of controlling possession while also winning physical battles, and the Brazilian’s profile fits that vision almost perfectly.
For many United supporters, this feels like a signing based on football intelligence rather than marketing hype — and that may be the most exciting part.
Atalanta, meanwhile, appear prepared to cash in after missing out on Champions League qualification. The Italian side will compete in the Conference League next season, and the huge transfer fee would represent one of the biggest sales in the club’s history.
Interestingly, this would continue the growing transfer relationship between Manchester United and Atalanta. Fans will remember Rasmus Hojlund making the same move in 2023 before eventually becoming an important player at Old Trafford.
Now Ederson could follow the same path.
The pressure, however, will be enormous.
Manchester United supporters are demanding a return to the elite level, and every signing will now be judged under Carrick’s ambitious rebuild. But if Ederson adapts quickly to Premier League football, he could become the engine that finally gives United the balance they have been missing for years.
One thing is becoming very clear: Manchester United are not wasting time this summer.
And if Ederson is only the beginning, Old Trafford could be in for a very busy transfer window.
