Chelsea’s transfer strategy is under fire once again, and this time the criticism is coming from Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.
The former England captain has openly questioned Chelsea’s recent recruitment decisions, calling the signings of Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens “very strange” while also highlighting the controversial decision to sell Noni Madueke to Arsenal.
Speaking on his BBC podcast, Rooney did not hold back as he analysed the current state of the Chelsea squad under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali.
According to Rooney, Chelsea’s massive squad overhaul has created more confusion than progress, with several expensive signings failing to deliver the expected impact.
One of the biggest talking points remains the departure of Madueke to Arsenal. Since arriving at the Emirates Stadium, the winger has exploded into top form, helping Mikel Arteta’s side challenge for the Premier League title and reach the UEFA Champions League final.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s replacement signing Jamie Gittens has struggled badly at Stamford Bridge.
The £52 million winger has managed just one goal in 27 appearances, leading many fans and pundits to question the logic behind the transfer move. Rooney admitted he simply could not understand why Chelsea allowed Madueke to leave while bringing in a player still struggling to adapt to Premier League football.
The criticism did not stop there.
Rooney also expressed serious doubts about Chelsea’s decision to sign Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. The Argentine youngster arrived in west London with huge expectations after showing flashes of brilliance at Old Trafford, but his Stamford Bridge spell has failed to ignite so far.
Despite the excitement surrounding the transfer, Garnacho has scored just one Premier League goal since joining the Blues, leaving supporters frustrated and questioning whether the club’s recruitment team prioritised hype over balance and experience.
Rooney believes Chelsea’s biggest issue is not a lack of talent, but rather the absence of experienced leaders capable of guiding the club’s young squad through difficult moments.
The Manchester United legend suggested Chelsea must clear out several underperforming players and bring in experienced personalities who can stabilise the dressing room and help younger stars develop properly.
Chelsea’s transfer business has become one of the hottest debates in football over the last few seasons. While the club continues investing heavily in youth and long-term potential, critics argue that immediate results and squad chemistry are being sacrificed in the process.
With Arsenal thriving after the Madueke deal and Chelsea still searching for consistency, Rooney’s comments are likely to spark even more debate among fans across the football world.
As pressure continues to mount at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea supporters will hope the club’s recruitment strategy eventually delivers success instead of more expensive questions.
