Victor Osimhen celebrates after scoring for Galatasaray as Super Eagles stars shine across Europe
It was another memorable weekend for Nigeria’s top football stars across Europe, with Victor Osimhen making history, Arthur Okonkwo producing a stunning goalkeeping display, and Chidera Ejuke finally ending his long wait for a goal.
From Turkey to Spain, Belgium and Germany, Nigerian players were once again making headlines across some of Europe’s biggest leagues.
Here is a look at the biggest performances from the Super Eagles stars abroad this weekend.
The biggest headline came from Turkey, where Victor Osimhen continued his incredible goalscoring form for Galatasaray.
The Nigerian striker scored twice and provided an assist as Galatasaray cruised to a 4-0 victory over Erzurumspor.
The brace took Osimhen’s Galatasaray tally to 62 goals in 76 appearances, moving him above Milan Baros to become the third-highest foreign goalscorer in the club’s history.
It is another remarkable milestone for the 27-year-old, who continues to establish himself as one of the most dangerous strikers in European football.
Osimhen’s consistency has also made him one of the biggest attacking weapons available to the Super Eagles.
While Osimhen grabbed the headlines in Turkey, Arthur Okonkwo produced one of the weekend’s most impressive individual performances in England.
The Nigerian goalkeeper made an astonishing eight saves on his debut, producing a performance that immediately caught the attention of supporters.
For a goalkeeper making his first appearance, keeping his team in the game under constant pressure was an impressive statement.
Okonkwo’s display will also be encouraging for Nigeria as competition for the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping position continues to develop.
In Spain, Chidera Ejuke finally ended a frustrating 251-day wait for a goal.
The Sevilla winger produced a moment of real quality, scoring a delicate chip during his side’s away victory over Athletic Bilbao.
After months without finding the net, the goal could provide Ejuke with the confidence he needs to kick-start his season.
However, his post-match comments also attracted criticism from some Sevilla supporters, with the Nigerian facing backlash after speaking English during an interview.
On the pitch, though, Ejuke’s goal was exactly what Sevilla and the player himself needed.
Meanwhile, Ademola Lookman is still waiting for his first goal contribution of the campaign.
The Atletico Madrid forward featured in his side’s tense home draw against Villarreal but was unable to get his name on the scoresheet or provide an assist.
After his impressive performances for Nigeria and previous exploits in European football, expectations remain high for the winger.
A goal or assist could be all Lookman needs to get his campaign moving.
In Belgium, Rafiu Durosinmi is quickly becoming one of the players Nigerian football fans need to watch.
The forward scored again for Genk in their dramatic 4-4 draw against Royal Antwerp.
That goal means Durosinmi now has three goals in three games to begin the season.
That is exactly the kind of start that gets attention, and if his form continues, the striker could soon find himself pushing for greater recognition on the international stage.
In Germany, Nathan Tella also opened his account for the new season.
The Bayer Leverkusen winger came off the bench and scored in his side’s comfortable cup victory.
It was a positive moment for Tella, who will be hoping to establish himself as a more regular contributor for Leverkusen this season.
His Nigerian teammate Victor Boniface remained an unused substitute in the match.
From Osimhen’s historic goalscoring record to Okonkwo’s eight-save debut, Ejuke’s long-awaited goal and Durosinmi’s perfect start, it was another weekend that showed the depth of Nigerian talent playing across Europe.
And with the new season only getting started, there could be plenty more Nigerian stars making headlines in the weeks ahead.
For the Super Eagles, that can only be good news.
