‘He Needs To Realise!’ – Nuno Bans Adama Traore From Lifting Weights At West Ham
Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed he has strictly forbidden Adama Traoré from lifting weights at West Ham United F.C.’s Rush Green training ground.
The Hammers boss believes the winger’s naturally powerful physique is already more than sufficient — and that further muscle-building could actually hinder his explosive style of play.
“It’s Incredible – It’s Genetics”
Traore, who joined West Ham in January from Fulham F.C., is renowned for his extraordinary muscular build and pace.
But Nuno insists the Spaniard must stay away from the weights room.
“It’s incredible; it’s genetics,” Nuno said.
“His genetics have been like this for a while now, and he should avoid the gym. I told him to stay away from the gym. It’s one of the things I believe he should realise. He carries enough weight. He’ll do prevention work, but he’s not going to lift weights.”
According to the manager, the decision is about efficiency and protecting Traore’s primary asset — his acceleration.
A Unique Physical Profile
While most Premier League players spend significant time building strength, Traore’s natural hypertrophy places him at the opposite end of the spectrum.
Nuno contrasted his regime with younger players like 18-year-old defender Airidas Golambeckis, who are encouraged to spend “hours in the gym” to add bulk.
Instead, Traore’s programme now centres on:
-
Flexibility work
-
Injury prevention
-
Maintaining agility
-
Preserving top-end speed
The aim is to ensure his muscle mass does not compromise mobility or increase injury risk.
Gym Myth Debunked
Traore has previously claimed he does not lift weights, though team-mate Crysencio Summerville recently posted footage of him working out — challenging that narrative.
However, under Nuno’s guidance, resistance training appears set to be limited moving forward.
Fighting For A Starting Spot
Despite the headlines around his physique, Traore’s integration into West Ham’s starting XI has been gradual.
Since arriving alongside Axel Disasi and Taty Castellanos, he has largely featured as an impact substitute. His only start so far came in an FA Cup win over Burton Albion, with Premier League outings against Manchester United F.C., Chelsea F.C. and Liverpool F.C. coming from the bench.
Nuno remains patient but clear about the competition ahead of him.
“He has to understand many things inside of the dynamic of the team. But ahead of him he has two players at the top of their game in Jarrod Bowen and Summerville.”
With Jarrod Bowen and Summerville performing strongly, Traore must wait for his opportunity — though when it comes, few defenders will relish facing a fully primed version of the Spaniard.
For now, the message from Nuno is simple: less iron, more ignition.
