Manchester United complete deal to sign Liverpool academy winger Isaac Konde

Manchester United have reportedly completed a deal to sign highly-rated Liverpool academy winger Isaac Konde, continuing the club’s aggressive recruitment of young talent.

The 16-year-old is set to leave Liverpool for Manchester after United reached an agreement for the promising winger, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Konde’s move represents another example of United looking to strengthen their youth setup by bringing in some of the most promising young players from rival academies.

Manchester United raid Liverpool academy

Konde is regarded as one of Liverpool’s promising young talents and has already progressed beyond his age group.

Although he does not turn 17 until next month, the winger has featured for Liverpool’s Under-18 side.

The teenager primarily operates on the left wing but is capable of playing in different attacking positions.

He will now continue his development within Manchester United’s academy, where he will look to establish himself and earn opportunities with the club’s Under-18 team.

The move will be closely watched given the historic rivalry between Manchester United and Liverpool.

United continue focus on youth recruitment

Konde’s arrival fits into Manchester United’s broader strategy of investing heavily in young players.

The Red Devils have already recruited promising youngsters from rival clubs in recent windows, including former Arsenal academy players Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi.

Heaven has emerged as the clearest example of the potential rewards of that approach.

Since joining United from Arsenal, the 19-year-old defender has broken into the first team and has already made 25 senior appearances, including 22 Premier League appearances.

Obi’s development has been less straightforward.

The Danish striker made eight senior appearances during the 2024-25 season but struggled for regular opportunities the following campaign. He has since joined Dutch club Willem II on loan as United look to give him more playing time and help accelerate his development.

United’s senior squad still needs attention

While United continue to invest in the future, questions remain over the balance of their senior squad.

The midfield has undergone significant changes, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba among the notable additions.

Defensively, however, United still appear to have areas that require strengthening.

Left-back is one of the positions that could cause concern, with Luke Shaw currently the club’s only established natural option in that position.

That could create an opportunity for another young player to make the jump into the first team.

Paraguayan youth international Diego Leon was signed with the future in mind, but injuries or a lack of senior options could see him given first-team opportunities sooner than expected.

For now, United will hope Konde can follow a similar development path to Heaven and eventually make the step from academy prospect to first-team player.
