William Troost-Ekong Set For New Challenge As Super Eagles Star Nears Qatar Move
Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is preparing for a new chapter in his career, with reports confirming that the Nigerian defender is set to leave Saudi Arabian side Al Kholood for a move to Qatar.
According to respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 32-year-old centre-back is close to completing a switch to Qatar Stars League outfit Al Ahli SC (Doha). Troost-Ekong is expected to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him in Qatar until June 2028.
Troost-Ekong Brings Leadership From Saudi Arabia
Troost-Ekong joined Al Kholood in August 2024 and wasted no time making his presence felt. His leadership qualities and vast experience quickly earned him the captain’s armband, and he played a pivotal role in helping the club secure Saudi Pro League survival last season.
However, the 2026 campaign has been far less kind to Al Kholood. The club has endured a torrid run of form, losing eight of their last nine league matches and slipping to just three points above the relegation zone. Despite Troost-Ekong’s consistent performances, the team’s struggles appear to have accelerated his decision to seek a fresh challenge.
Al Ahli Move Signals New Ambition
Troost-Ekong’s impending arrival comes at a crucial time for Al Ahli SC, who are looking to stabilize a defense that has struggled for consistency this season. The Doha-based club currently sits 9th in the 12-team Qatar Stars League table, having collected 15 points from 13 matches.
With relegation concerns looming, the signing of an experienced international defender represents a statement of intent. Al Ahli are hoping Troost-Ekong’s leadership and composure will help them climb the table and compete more effectively with Qatari heavyweights such as Al Sadd and Al Duhail.
Set To Link Up With Julian Draxler
The move will also see Troost-Ekong share the dressing room with German international Julian Draxler. The 2014 World Cup winner has been one of Al Ahli’s standout performers since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain and recently extended his contract until 2028.
Draxler’s creativity and Troost-Ekong’s defensive authority could form a crucial spine as Al Ahli look to turn their season around.
Another Strategic Move In A Veteran Career
For Troost-Ekong, the transfer represents another calculated step in a career defined by adaptability and leadership across Europe and the Middle East. With his experience at both club and international level, the former Super Eagles skipper will be expected to make an immediate impact in Doha.
If completed, the move will further underline the growing influence of Nigerian players across top leagues outside Europe.
