AFCON 2025
Claude Le Roy Expresses Concern Over Ademola Lookman’s Super Eagles Form Ahead Of AFCON 2025
Ademola Lookman’s impressive club form hasn’t yet fully translated to international success, according to former Ghana manager Claude Le Roy. The veteran coach has expressed concern about the Nigerian forward’s performances for the Super Eagles as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco draws closer.
While Lookman has been exceptional for Atalanta in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, replicating that impact at the international level has proven more difficult. The 28-year-old last scored for Nigeria in a 3-0 AFCON qualifying win over Benin Republic on September 7, 2024, when he netted a brace.
Le Roy Weighs In On Lookman’s Form
Speaking to Canal+, Le Roy said:
“Lookman, when he comes back to the Nigeria national team, is not quite the same player anymore.”
However, the veteran coach also acknowledged that the attacker is showing signs of regaining his confidence:
“We get the impression that in the last few matches with his club, he is starting to get a little bit comfortable… we are starting to see him again in certain plays. He is finding life a little easier.”
Nigeria Remains A Contender Despite Concerns
Despite highlighting Lookman’s dip in form, Le Roy remains bullish about Nigeria’s chances in AFCON 2025:
“So yes, Nigeria remains one of the favourites for the AFCON after Morocco.”
The forward has been named in coach Eric Chelle’s 54-man provisional squad, making him a key figure in the Super Eagles’ attack. With the tournament fast approaching, Lookman will face pressure to translate his club brilliance into consistent, high-level performances for his country.
What This Means For Fans And The Sports Market
For Nigerian fans, Lookman’s form is critical. His performance could influence:
-
Nigeria’s AFCON chances
-
Betting and fantasy football markets
-
Sponsorships and player valuations
-
Overall Super Eagles squad confidence
As AFCON 2025 approaches, all eyes will be on Lookman to see if he can become the difference-maker for Nigeria on Africa’s biggest stage.
