AFCON 2025
Stanley Nwabali Doubtful For AFCON As Eric Chelle Faces Tough Goalkeeping Decision
The Super Eagles have been dealt another heavy blow ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, as first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is now a major doubt for the tournament. This development puts head coach Eric Chelle under pressure to make one of the toughest squad decisions before the continental competition kicks off.
Nwabali, who was widely praised for his commanding performances at the last AFCON, has seen public trust in his consistency fade in recent months. Still, losing him at this crucial moment leaves Nigeria with more questions than answers, especially as his possible replacements carry their own uncertainties.
Nwabali’s Injury Situation
According to Chippa United head coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi, the 28-year-old is currently battling a hand and ankle injury — issues worsened during the last international break.
His last appearance came against Magesi ahead of the World Cup playoff qualifiers, and since then, he has missed games against Orlando Pirates, Siwelele and Kaizer Chiefs.
Vilakazi didn’t mince words when giving his update:
“I don’t think he will make it. But when I was talking to him, he was confident that he will recover very soon.”
Despite being included in Eric Chelle’s 54-man preliminary list, signs point to Nwabali potentially missing the tournament entirely — a huge concern for Super Eagles fans.
Who Could Replace Nwabali?
If Nwabali is ruled out, several names are in line to step up — but none come without baggage.
1. Maduka Okoye (Udinese) — The Most Likely
Once Nigeria’s No.1, Okoye lost his spot after his costly error against Tunisia in AFCON 2021.
He is currently rebuilding form in Serie A after returning from a betting-related suspension.
He has the experience, but the question remains:
Can he be trusted under pressure?
2. Amas Obasogie (Singida Blackstars)
Solid in Tanzania, but lacks top-tier continental experience.
3. Adebayo Adeleye (Volos FC)
Talented and athletic, but still inconsistent in judgment and command of the box.
4. Francis Uzoho (Omonia FC)
Has experience — but is currently out of favor with fans due to numerous high-profile errors.
5. Ebenezer Harcourt (Sporting Lagos)
A rising local star, but AFCON may be too big a stage too soon.
Chelle’s Big Test
With Real Madrid-level pressure now on the Super Eagles coaching bench, Eric Chelle must find the right balance between experience, current form, and mental stability.
Nwabali’s injury doesn’t just remove a first-choice goalkeeper — it removes a steady presence that the defense had grown familiar with.
The coming days will determine whether Nwabali can pull off a miraculous recovery or if Nigeria will head into AFCON with an untested plan B.
