Al-Hilal hijack Crysencio Summerville transfer after Barcelona talks collapse over Raphinha
Al-Hilal dramatically changed their transfer strategy after negotiations with Barcelona over Raphinha collapsed, securing the signing of Crysencio Summerville from West Ham in an €80 million deal.
The Saudi Pro League giants had initially prioritised the Barcelona winger but quickly shifted their attention to the Dutch international after talks with the Catalan club broke down. Their swift move allowed them to beat Serie A side Roma to one of Europe’s most sought-after young attackers.
Barcelona talks collapse over Raphinha
According to Saudi journalist Mohammed Al-Bukairy, Al-Hilal originally submitted an €80 million offer to Barcelona for Raphinha while also attempting to negotiate a deal involving Joao Cancelo.
However, negotiations reportedly deteriorated after Barcelona president Joan Laporta pushed for a transfer fee closer to €100 million.
Al-Hilal viewed the increased demands as unreasonable and immediately abandoned their pursuit of the Brazilian, opting to explore alternative options.
Summerville becomes the priority
With the Raphinha deal effectively dead, Al-Hilal accelerated their search for another elite winger.
Summerville quickly emerged as the preferred option despite not being the club’s first-choice target at the beginning of the transfer window. The Dutch winger was also attracting serious interest from Roma, who were reportedly close to completing a deal worth around €50 million.
After receiving advice that Roma’s negotiations were progressing rapidly, Al-Hilal acted decisively.
The Saudi club submitted an €80 million offer—approximately €30 million more than Roma’s proposal—which West Ham accepted almost immediately.
Reports claim the final negotiations and initial paperwork were completed within an hour.
Financial strength proves decisive
Al-Hilal’s financial muscle ultimately proved impossible for West Ham to ignore.
While clubs across Europe admired Summerville’s talent, few were prepared to match the Saudi club’s valuation. Their willingness to significantly outbid Roma ensured they secured one of the summer’s biggest transfers.
The move also underlines Al-Hilal’s determination to continue attracting elite European talent despite missing out on other high-profile targets.
World Cup performances boosted his value
Summerville’s impressive performances for the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup significantly increased his market value.
The 24-year-old emerged as one of the tournament’s breakout stars, contributing to five goals in six appearances while helping the Dutch reach the latter stages of the competition.
His displays attracted widespread interest from several top European clubs, but Al-Hilal ultimately won the race by moving quickly and offering a package no rival could match.
Final verdict
Al-Hilal’s pursuit of Summerville highlights how quickly transfer plans can change at the highest level.
After refusing to meet Barcelona’s demands for Raphinha, the Saudi giants redirected their resources towards one of Europe’s brightest young wingers and successfully beat Roma to his signature.
For Summerville, the blockbuster move marks another major step in a career that has continued to rise following an outstanding World Cup campaign.
