Mikel Arteta Admits Arsenal Should Have Done Better Against 10-Man Chelsea
Arteta Admits Arsenal Missed A Big Opportunity Against 10-Man Chelsea
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed frustration after his side failed to take full advantage of their numerical superiority in the 1-1 draw against Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea.
The Gunners entered the match looking to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, but a tough Chelsea performance — even after going down to 10 men — denied them maximum points.
Chelsea Strike First Despite Caicedo’s Red Card
The game took a dramatic turn when Moises Caicedo was sent off in the 38th minute, leaving Chelsea with an uphill task.
Shockingly, the Blues still found a way to take the lead through a powerful header from Trevor Chalobah, stunning the Emirates crowd.
Arsenal eventually rescued a point in the second half thanks to Mikel Merino, but the equaliser wasn’t enough to mask the disappointment.
“We Expected A Different Game Against 10 Men” — Arteta
Speaking after the match, Arteta reflected on the intensity and emotion that shaped the early stages of the game:
“Right from the beginning, you could sense how much was at stake. Every duel and action was full gas, very short sequences of play.”
He admitted that Arsenal had prepared specifically for how the game should look once Chelsea were reduced to 10 men — but things didn’t go according to plan.
“With the 10 men we expected a different game… They get a free kick and they score.”
Arteta was clear in his disappointment:
“When you don’t win with 10 men for 45 minutes, you have to be disappointed.”
A Tough Week For The Squad, But Arteta Remains Positive
Despite expressing frustration, Arteta acknowledged the demanding schedule and the challenges his squad faced heading into the match:
-
Players who had not played together
-
A mentally and physically demanding week
-
Unexpected issues before kick-off
He praised the group’s determination:
“The spirit of the team is intact. We’ve had a massive week both mentally and physically, and overall it’s a positive week.”
Final Thoughts
Arsenal may feel they dropped two points, but Arteta believes the foundation remains strong.
Chelsea, even with 10 men, showed resilience — while Arsenal’s struggle highlights areas they must improve if they hope to maintain a title push.
