Alessandro Nesta Reveals He Never Planned to Join AC Milan After Inter Pulled Out of Transfer
Italian football legend Alessandro Nesta has revealed that his iconic move to AC Milan in 2002 was never part of his plan. The former Lazio captain disclosed that he was on the verge of signing for Inter before the Nerazzurri suddenly pulled out, forcing him into a last-minute switch to the Rossoneri — a move that would later define his career.
Inter’s Withdrawal Changed Everything
Speaking to BSMT, Nesta explained how a deal with Juventus collapsed before Inter came calling. He was fully expecting to move to the Nerazzurri until they backed out after May 5th, 2002 — the infamous day Inter lost the Serie A title on the final day of the season.
“I was supposed to go to Inter, but after May 5th, Inter disappeared; maybe they made other choices. Then, on the last day of the transfer window, Milan came along,” Nesta revealed.
Reluctant to Join Milan, But Fate Intervened
The legendary defender admitted that he didn’t want to join AC Milan initially, as he believed Inter were better placed to dominate the following season. However, destiny had other ideas.
“I didn’t want to go because I was sure Inter would win the following year. And instead, I went to Milan and we won the Champions League in the first year. It went well for me,” he said.
Real Madrid and Roma Interest
Nesta also disclosed that Real Madrid once tried to sign him after a friendly against Lazio, while Roma were keen during his early years — but he rejected them out of loyalty to Lazio. Financial struggles at the Rome-based club eventually forced his departure after months of unpaid wages.
A Career-Defining Move
Despite not being his first choice, Nesta’s Milan career turned out to be legendary. He won multiple Serie A titles, two Champions League trophies, and cemented his status as one of the greatest defenders of his generation.
