Nigerian FA Didn’t Pay – Jay-Jay Okocha Reveals Treatment Of Team During Atlanta 1996
Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed the difficult conditions the Super Eagles faced during their historic run to Olympic gold at the Atlanta 1996 Games.
Despite producing one of the most memorable moments in African football history, Okocha explained that the players were not properly compensated or treated fairly by the Nigerian Football Association (NFA).
Okocha’s Revelation
Speaking about the tournament, Okocha said the squad endured poor treatment off the pitch, even as they made history on it.
“We were not paid what we were promised. The treatment was not good enough for a team that made history.”
His comments shed light on the struggles players had to endure while representing the nation, showing the contrast between their success on the field and the difficulties they faced behind the scenes.

Atlanta 1996 – A Historic Triumph
The Nigerian team, famously nicknamed the Dream Team, stunned the world by defeating football powerhouses Brazil in the semi-final and Argentina in the final to become the first African nation to win Olympic football gold.
Led by the likes of Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Daniel Amokachi, and Celestine Babayaro, the triumph remains one of the greatest achievements in Nigerian and African football history.
Legacy
Okocha’s revelation adds another layer to the story of Atlanta 1996, highlighting the resilience and determination of the players. Despite the challenges off the pitch, they delivered a performance that continues to inspire future generations of footballers across Africa.
What Has Changed Since 1996?
Nearly three decades later, Nigerian football still faces similar issues with administration, player welfare, and financial disputes. While the national teams continue to produce world-class talent, the recurring challenges show that the lessons from 1996 have not been fully addressed.
Okocha’s words serve as both a reminder of past struggles and a call for better governance to ensure future generations of players are treated with the respect and support they deserve.
