Raphael Onyedika’s Club Brugge clinched their 12th Belgian Cup title with a 2-1 victory over fierce rivals Anderlecht in a pulsating final at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Sunday, according to Soccernet.ng.
Goals in each half from 21-year-old Romeo Vermant proved decisive, as Club Brugge outclassed Anderlecht in the 202nd meeting between the Belgian heavyweights.
Vermant latched on to a precise Hugo Siquet cross to open the scoring, before doubling the lead with another composed finish — this time from a delivery by Christos Tzolis.
Anderlecht responded late in the second half through Luis Vázquez, but the goal proved too little too late as Brugge held firm to secure the trophy.
The 24-year-old, who has been one of the most consistent performers for Brugge this season, picked up a yellow card in the 22nd minute but kept his cool to help control the tempo of the match and frustrate Anderlecht’s attempts at a comeback.
Club Brugge’s path to the final included victories over Patro Eisden, OH Leuven and Genk, while Anderlecht overcame Westerlo, Beerschot and Royal Antwerp to reach Brussels.
The cup triumph guarantees Club Brugge a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League and sets up a Belgian Super Cup showdown against the league champions. But there’s more at stake — they remain firmly in contention for the league title, sitting just one point behind leaders Union Saint-Gilloise with three games to play.
A domestic double is now within reach, something the club last achieved in the 1995-96 season.
Onyedika has been a mainstay for Brugge in the 2024/25 campaign, racking up 31 league appearances and logging 2,213 minutes. He’s started 27 times, chipped in with one goal and one assist, and last featured in the 0-0 draw against Union SG on April 27.
He opened his goal account this season in a 7-0 demolition of Sint-Truiden in November. Now, with momentum building, Brugge travel to Genk on May 11 knowing that every point is vital.
Signed from Midtjylland in August 2022, Onyedika continues to grow in stature — and if his performances this season are anything to go by, he could be key to Brugge’s double dream.
