How Victor Osimhen’s Timely Support Helped Janet Semenya Rise from Heartbreak to Benfica

For many young footballers, the journey to the top is often defined by moments of triumph and adversity. For Nigerian teenage sensation Janet Semenya, both came within the space of a few days.

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, renowned not only for his exploits on the pitch but also for his generosity off it, reportedly stepped in with substantial financial assistance to support the youngster’s treatment and rehabilitation.

According to Semenya, the Nigerian forward donated millions of naira to ensure she received quality medical care before she was flown to Portugal to begin an intensive rehabilitation programme.

Months of hard work, determination and recovery eventually paid off.

Rather than allowing the injury to define her career, Semenya fought back stronger and has now secured a move to Portuguese champions Benfica, a transfer she describes as the beginning of a new chapter in her football journey.

Speaking after completing the move, the young midfielder reserved special appreciation for Osimhen, whose kindness, she said, gave her renewed hope during one of the darkest moments of her career.

“I want to thank Uncle Victor,” Semenya said.

“I have never met him personally, but my manager, Tobi Peters, is very close to him and has always spoken highly of him. He always tells me that Victor is an incredible person, encourages me to play with his determination, and advises me to watch his games and learn from him.

“My move to Benfica is dedicated to him and to every young female footballer chasing a dream. His support came when I needed it most, and I will always remain grateful.”

For Osimhen, the gesture is another example of his growing reputation as a footballer who quietly gives back to society beyond the headlines generated by his goals and achievements. While millions celebrate him for his exploits in Europe and with the Super Eagles, those closest to the game continue to speak of his willingness to support young talents whose careers hang in the balance.

For Semenya, what began as a devastating setback has become a story of resilience, compassion and redemption.

The Barcelona dream may have slipped away because of injury, but another door has opened at Benfica. And as she embarks on the next phase of her career in Portugal, she carries with her not only renewed ambition but also the memory of an act of kindness that helped transform despair into hope.
