Man Utd Reportedly Regret Snubbing Ederson as Tielemans and Santos Face Scrutiny

Manchester United are reportedly questioning a major midfield decision after turning away from Atalanta’s Ederson in favour of alternative targets Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

According to a report attributed to The Sun journalist Samuel Luckhurst, United’s decision-makers have privately acknowledged that Tielemans and Santos were fallback options, with Ederson among the club’s preferred midfield targets last summer. The Brazilian’s medical results reportedly raised concerns, leading the Premier League side to abandon negotiations.

With United now assessing their midfield options, the decision is attracting renewed attention, particularly as Ederson continues to feature for Atalanta.

Why Manchester United walked away from Ederson

Ederson had reportedly been on Manchester United’s shortlist for an extended period. However, despite progressing towards a deal with Atalanta, the move collapsed after medical examinations reportedly flagged an issue.

United subsequently redirected their attention towards other midfielders. Tielemans became a key alternative, with the club reportedly activating his £35 million release clause. Santos was another option as the club looked to strengthen its midfield depth.

At the time, prioritising a player with Premier League experience may have appeared to be a sensible decision. Yet the latest reports suggest that United’s recruitment team may now be reconsidering whether walking away from Ederson was the right call.

Ederson has since renewed his contract with Atalanta, making a potential future move more complicated. Any suggestion that United could revisit their interest would depend on the club’s recruitment priorities and Atalanta’s willingness to negotiate.

Tielemans and Santos under pressure to deliver

The reported reassessment comes as both United midfielders face questions about their performances and roles in Michael Carrick’s team.

Tielemans has featured regularly, but his contribution has not always convinced. The Belgian has reportedly struggled to establish a consistently effective partnership with Kobbie Mainoo, with the two midfielders potentially offering overlapping qualities.

A different tactical setup could help Tielemans. Pairing him with a more defensively minded midfielder, such as Carlos Baleba, could allow Mainoo to take on a more creative role. That would, however, depend on Carrick’s preferred system and the balance he wants across the midfield.

Santos faces a different challenge: earning meaningful minutes. Despite his reported £50 million move to Chelsea before joining United in this scenario, the Brazilian has struggled to secure a regular place in the starting lineup. Limited opportunities, including when Baleba was unavailable, raise questions about his current standing in the squad.

Nevertheless, a small sample of appearances is not enough to determine a player’s long-term value. Santos may still need time to adapt, establish himself and demonstrate what he can offer the team.

The numbers behind the debate

  • Youri Tielemans: Eight appearances, 598 minutes and two assists for Manchester United.
  • Andrey Santos: Five appearances, 175 minutes, with no goals or assists.
  • Ederson: Seven appearances, 597 minutes and one goal for Atalanta.

Ederson’s minutes are particularly notable: he has played almost as much as Tielemans despite making one fewer appearance. Santos, meanwhile, has received considerably less time on the pitch.

These figures do not settle the debate over who is the better player. The midfielders have different responsibilities, and a meaningful comparison would also consider their defensive work, passing, ball progression, tactical role and the quality of their opposition.

United’s recruitment concerns extend beyond midfield

The reported regret over Ederson is not the only recruitment issue facing United. The original report also highlights the club’s failure to sign a left-back, with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall reportedly identified as a leading target.

Newcastle were unwilling to open negotiations with their rivals, leaving United unable to secure the player and without a suitable alternative, according to the report.

That situation could become more significant if Luke Shaw continues to struggle with availability or form. A lack of depth in key positions can place additional pressure on a squad across a demanding season.

For United, the broader question is whether their recruitment strategy has delivered the right balance of quality, availability and tactical fit. Missing out on a preferred target is not necessarily a mistake, especially when medical concerns are involved. The real test is whether the alternatives provide sufficient value and improve the team over time.

Should Manchester United regret choosing Tielemans and Santos?

The answer remains uncertain. Ederson’s current involvement at Atalanta makes him an attractive point of comparison, but United’s original decision reportedly followed medical concerns that cannot simply be ignored.

Tielemans has already contributed assists and regular minutes, while Santos has had fewer opportunities to make his case. Their respective situations should be judged over a longer period rather than on a handful of early-season appearances.

If Ederson continues to perform well and United’s alternatives fail to establish themselves, the decision to abandon the deal may attract even more scrutiny. But if Tielemans becomes an effective part of Carrick’s midfield and Santos develops into a dependable option, the move could look different with time.

For now, the story is a reminder that football recruitment is about more than identifying talent. Clubs must also weigh medical assessments, transfer fees, tactical compatibility and the long-term development of their squads.

Sports Marketing International verdict: United may have missed an opportunity with Ederson, but it is too early to label the decision a definitive transfer mistake. The coming months should provide a clearer picture of whether Tielemans and Santos can justify the club’s reported choices.
