Nigeria’s National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko participated in the Interregional African Ministerial meeting in Banjul on Tuesday after which he revealed that Nigeria may put in a formal bid to host the 15th edition of the African Games.

While speaking at the event attended by Ministers of Sports in Africa and UNESCO Anti-Doping Convention officials among other experts across the globe, Dikko took the opportunity as one of the panellists to highlight the reforms being undertaken in Nigerian sports and emphasise President Tinubu’s support for the sector. Tinubu was praised for throwing his support behind the nation’s sports reforms, making investments to propel the sector’s progress and restoring the NSC.

Following his talk Dikko met with the African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Minata Samara Cessounma, with whom he expressed the NSC’s wish to collaborate in advancing sports development in Africa before the two then discussed Nigeria’s potential as a host of the African Games in 2031.

“Preliminary exploratory discussions were held to encourage Nigeria to consider making a bid to host the African Games 2031 among other collaborative initiatives between Nigeria and the African Union in advancing sports development in Africa,” said Dikko. Previously named the All-Africa Games, Nigeria has hosted the African Games twice before when it came to Lagos in 1973 and Abuja in 2003. A bid to host in 2031 coincides with the NSC’s revitalised mission of upgrading sports infrastructures across Nigeria to attract more and more international sporting events and aid the sports economy.

“On the sideline, I engaged the Director of WADA Africa, Mr Rodney Swigelaar and the CEO of USA Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), Mr Travis Tygard in relation to Nigeria’s quest to strengthen our anti-doping framework,” said Dikko. “Providing updates on the status of the ongoing legislative work on the Nigeria Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) Bill including the proposal in the 2025 fiscal year to build a world-class anti-doping lab in Nigeria to serve the whole of Africa to which both parties committed to providing all the necessary support and enablers to make the project a success.”
