Will Neymar be fit for the World Cup? Brazil issue encouraging injury update after latest scan
Brazil have received a significant boost ahead of the World Cup after Neymar’s latest medical assessment showed positive signs in his recovery from injury.
The Santos forward remains sidelined with a calf problem, but the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has confirmed that his rehabilitation is progressing as expected, raising hopes that he could still play an important role during the tournament.
Positive MRI results for Neymar
Neymar underwent a scheduled MRI scan on Monday as part of the ongoing monitoring of the grade two muscle injury he suffered in his right calf on May 17 while playing for Santos.
The results were encouraging, with Brazil’s medical staff satisfied by the progress made since the initial diagnosis.
While the update stops short of confirming a return date, it strengthens optimism that the 34-year-old remains on course to feature at some stage during the competition.
CBF confirms recovery remains on schedule
In an official medical bulletin, the CBF outlined the latest stage of Neymar’s rehabilitation programme and confirmed there have been no setbacks.
The statement read:
“The athlete Neymar underwent an MRI scan this Monday. The examination showed good progress in his treatment, within the expected parameters.
“He will continue the recovery and physical preparation process planned by the Brazilian National Team’s medical staff.”
The update is the clearest indication yet that Neymar’s recovery is moving in the right direction.
Brazil unwilling to take unnecessary risks
Despite the positive news, Brazil are determined not to rush their star player back into action.
The Selecao’s medical team are prioritising Neymar’s long-term fitness and want to ensure he is fully prepared before returning to competitive football.
As a result, Brazil are expected to take a conservative approach during the opening phase of the tournament rather than risk aggravating the injury through an early comeback.
Morocco clash likely to come too soon
Brazil’s opening World Cup group-stage fixture against Morocco is currently expected to arrive too early for Neymar.
The forward is unlikely to be included in the matchday squad as he continues his rehabilitation programme under close medical supervision.
However, there is growing confidence that he could become available later in the group stage if his recovery continues on its current trajectory.
Focus on knockout stages
For now, Neymar’s work remains centred on regaining full fitness.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star has been restricted largely to gym sessions and physiotherapy work, although a transition to individual on-field training could be the next step in his recovery.
Brazil’s priority is clear: ensure Neymar is fully fit for the decisive stages of the World Cup rather than rushing him back for the opening matches.
If his progress continues as expected, the Selecao could receive a major boost just as the tournament enters its most important phase.
