EPL: Mikel Obi counsels Maresca to replace two Chelsea players
Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has called for Chelsea to replace Nicolas Jackson and Robert Sanchez following their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
Mikel Obi criticized both players, stating they were “not good enough.”
Chelsea initially took the lead in the 3rd minute through Noni Madueke’s goal. However, Manchester City responded with goals from Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland, with Phil Foden adding a third after racing through to beat Sanchez.
The result leaves Chelsea in sixth place, 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool. Mikel Obi, reflecting on the match, suggested that Jackson’s missed opportunity could have altered the outcome.
“Again, we went 1-0 up and we had that chance to go 2-0 up with Nicolas Jackson,” Mikel Obi said on The Obi One Podcast. “Some people are saying that the pass from Cole Palmer is a little bit… no, it’s not. You’re a striker, just put your foot through it.
“If you miss it, it’s fine. But attempt to score. What did he do? Just controlled the ball and then came back. Your job is to f***ing score the goals, that’s why you were brought to the football club. Put the ball in the back of the net and try to score. He didn’t do that.”
On Sanchez, Mikel Obi added: “Not good enough. He’s not a top, top ‘keeper. He’s good enough to be there in the league but he’s not good enough [for Chelsea].”
