Mbappe destroys Barca as PSG win fiery Champions League clash

Barcelona saw red three times and Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris Saint Germain knocked the Spanish giants out of the Champions League.

Barcelona had to play with ten men for an hour after defender Ronald Araujo was sent off in the first half. And Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs also showed red cards to Xavi and his goalkeeping coach Jose Ramon De la Fuente as the French team won 4-1 on the night and 6-4 on aggregate.

Araujo left the field indicating that his team had been robbed. And it was with the same complaint that Xavi was sent from his technical area.

The big calls went against them and PSG took advantage with Ousmane Dembele superb against his former club and Mbappe lethal when he had to be.

Barcelona made it 1-0 on the night on 12 minutes with a goal scored by Raphinha but made by Lamine Yamal.

Araujo played a long crossfield pass to him and for the first time in the game the teenager took on Nuno Mendes. The PSG left-back had no chance as Yamal dropped a shoulder and accelerated past him to the byline from where he pulled the back for Raphinha to covert past Gianluigi Donnarumma at the near post.

It was the perfect start for Barcelona but the complexion of the game changed dramatically on the half hour when Araujo was adjudged to have brought down Bradley Barcola just before he burst into the area.

Kovacs sent him off and it was a win-win for PSG because Xavi immediately substituted Yamal so he could bring on Iñigo Martinez.

Five minutes before the break PSG were level on the night. Barcola crossed from the left. It flashed past Kylian Mbappe but Ousmane Dembele arrived down the right to smash it into the roof of the net.

It was now 4-3 and Dembele almost levelled on aggregate but volleyed just wide on half time. The more hostile the home crowd against the former Barcelona forward the more he seemed to be up for the game.

PSG levelled on aggregate on 54 minutes when Vitinha’s shot fizzed through a crowd of players from the edge of the area and past Ter Stegen. The next decision that went against Barcelona provoked Xavi to kick a hoarding and he was shown the red card.

That meant he wasn’t in his technical area to see Mbappe make it 4-5 on aggregate from the penalty spot after Joao Cancelo had chopped down Dembele. De la Fuente was the next to be sent off before the villain of the first leg for PSG Gianluigi Donnarumma became PSG’s hero of the second saving from Lewandowski.

That chance seemed to be the catalyst for Barcelona to find their belief once more. The home supporters chanted: ‘yes, we can’ just as they had done back in 2017 when they won 6-1 to go through, and for all that Donnarumma had made a big save he still looked a liability from crosses.

PSG were close but panicking and one loss of possession gifted Lewandowski with another chance to equalise the tie but Marquinhos slid-in and sent the ball out for a corner. Raphinha almost scored directly from that corner but Donnarumma tipped it over for another corner and when that was cleared PSG broke to put the tie beyond doubt.

Ter Stegen saved brilliantly twice but when the ball came back out to Mbappe he got his second goal of the night and deliver the final fatal blow to Barcelona’s Champions League aspiration. For PSG the dream of a first European Cup survives into a semi-final against Borussia Dortmund.

Juventus nearly sacked Allegri after Italian Cup row

Massimiliano Allegri was close to being sacked by Juventus after exploding with anger during his team’s midweek Italian Cup triumph

Massimiliano Allegri was close to being sacked by Juventus after exploding with anger during his team’s midweek Italian Cup triumph, according to widespread reports in local media.

Juventus won their 15th Italian Cup on Wednesday night but Allegri burst into a rage, first being sent off in the final minutes after ranting at match officials and then waving away sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli during the post-match celebrations.

And Juve are now set to fire Allegri, who was already widely rumoured to be replaced by Bologna coach Thiago Motta in the summer, with two matches of the season remaining.

Juventus sit fourth in Serie A after collecting just 15 points in their last 15 league matches. They are at Bologna on Monday night. The two are teams level on 67 points and both have already qualified for next season’s revamped Champions League.

Italian media reported that Juve are evaluating whether to dismiss Allegri with just cause for his behaviour on Wednesday night, when he is also alleged to have manhandled and threatened the chief editor of newspaper Tuttosport before the post-match press conference.

Such a move would potentially save the club from paying Allegri the remaining year of his contract, which is worth around seven million euros before bonuses.

The Italian Football Federation’s disciplinary tribunal has launched an investigation into Allegri, who on Wednesday almost accidentally confirmed that this season would be his last at the Turin giants.

Allegri was on Thursday given an automatic two-match ban in the cup for his straight red card but could receive further punishment.

Man City move close to history – thanks to unlikely hero Romero

Manchester City saw an unlikely hero emerge from their galaxy of superstars to make a potentially defining contribution in their pursuit of an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola rightly acted with caution when he removed keeper Ederson, with City leading 1-0, after he suffered a nasty blow to the head in a heavy collision at the foot of his post with Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

Ederson, who had a problem with his eye, did not look happy with the decision – taken upon advice from the club doctor – but his manager was perfectly justified, not just acting in the best interests of the Brazilian keeper but also because he has complete trust in his replacement Stefan Ortega.

And in a 21-minute cameo of the highest quality, Ortega – who has performed with distinction every time he has deputised for Ederson this season – may well have rubber-stamped City’s sixth title in seven seasons.

When the final whistle sounded and the club stood one win away from being champions again, Guardiola headed straight for Ortega and greeted the German with a kiss on the cheek for his crucial contribution. It was richly deserved.

Guardiola did not hold back with the praise as he said: “Ortega is a world-class goalkeeper. An exceptional, exceptional goalkeeper. Ederson did not have concussion, he had a problem with his eye. He could not see properly so the doctor said I should change.”

Spurs made a complete mockery of the cynics who suggested they may ease off because any sort of positive result could potentially give rivals Arsenal their first Premier League title in 20 years.

Ange Postecoglou’s fifth-placed side were fully committed in chasing a goal of their own as they went after a place in the Champions League and it was not for any lack of effort as they came so close to upsetting City’s traditional title charge. They were left disappointed in the end as defeat confirmed Aston Villa’s fourth-placed finish and they will now join European football’s top table.

Ortega’s impact was instant, denying Spurs substitute Dejan Kulusevski with a good save and then the same player shortly afterwards as City almost paid the price for a performance that was not one of their best.

The biggest moment came in the closing minutes, with City clinging on to a one-goal lead, when Son Heung-min collected the ball and raced clear with only Ortega to beat. It was the sort of opportunity the South Korean has taken with aplomb so many times in his Spurs career.

Arsenal seek to silence doubters as Bayern Champions League test looms

The Premier League will have identical trophies waiting at the Etihad and Emirates Stadium on the final day, ensuring they are ready for a title-winning party at either venue.

Both Manchester City and Arsenal can win the title on Sunday, with City one point clear of the Gunners after their win at Tottenham last night.

City will be crowned champions if they beat West Ham, but any slip-up could let in Arsenal, who face Everton.

With more than 200 miles separating the Etihad and the Emirates, the Premier League will have trophies at both grounds.

There are two Premier League trophies, which are identical and include an engraved base detailing past champions.

During the season, one trophy stays with the champions and the other is used by the Premier League. Both are engraved after the final day.

Identical podiums and pyrotechnics will be in place at the Emirates and the Etihad for a trophy presentation.

There will be 40 medals at each ground. Every player who has made five Premier League appearances this season will get a medal, and the rest distributed to the manager, players and officials as the club sees fit.
