Manchester United confirm fourth summer signing as Michael Carrick lands highly-rated Wales goalkeeper

Manchester United have officially completed the signing of highly-rated Wales youth international Kit Margetson, with Michael Carrick continuing to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.

The promising goalkeeper arrives from Swansea City after the two clubs agreed a compensation package, becoming United’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

United complete Margetson deal

Although Margetson’s contract with Swansea had expired, Manchester United agreed to pay compensation to the Championship club in recognition of the player’s development through their academy.

The 20-year-old joined Swansea at Under-15 level and progressed through the youth ranks before gaining valuable senior experience during a loan spell with Connah’s Quay Nomads last season.

During his time in the Cymru Premier, Margetson kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances and played a key role in helping the club qualify for European competition.

His performances also earned him a Wales Under-21 debut against Belarus earlier this year.

Manchester United welcome ‘exciting’ goalkeeper

United confirmed the transfer in an official statement, praising the young goalkeeper’s potential.

The club said:

“Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young goalkeeper Kit Margetson, subject to registration.

“The 20-year-old was most recently at Swansea City, a club he’d been with since under-15s. Last season, he had his first taste of senior football on loan at Connah’s Quay Nomads and kept 10 clean sheets in 34 appearances, helping the Welsh side qualify for European competition.

“Margetson has also earned youth international caps for Wales and made his Under-21 debut against Belarus in March.

“Everyone at United would like to welcome Kit to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”

Swansea bid farewell

Swansea City also confirmed the transfer, thanking the academy graduate for his contribution and wishing him success at Old Trafford.

The Welsh club highlighted Margetson’s long association with Swansea, where he developed under the guidance of his father, Martyn Margetson, the former Swansea goalkeeper and current Wales goalkeeping coach.

Their statement read:

“Swansea City goalkeeper Kit Margetson has joined Manchester United, subject to the relevant approval, after the two clubs agreed a compensation package.

“The Wales Under-21 international has been with the Swans since under-15 level, with the club entitled to remuneration for the player’s development.

“Margetson was included in the first-team matchday squad during the 2024-25 season and became a regular member of the wider senior group.

“Everyone at Swansea City wishes Kit every success during his time at Old Trafford.”

Another investment in United’s future

Margetson’s arrival continues Manchester United’s strategy of recruiting some of Britain’s brightest young talents while strengthening the club’s long-term options in key positions.

While the Welsh goalkeeper is expected to continue his development within United’s academy and reserve setup, the move provides Carrick’s coaching staff with another highly-rated prospect capable of competing for a place in the years ahead.
