Gavi urges FIFA to show leniency after World Cup final brawl with Argentina

Spain midfielder Gavi has called on FIFA not to hand out suspensions to Argentina’s players following the chaotic scenes that erupted after the 2026 World Cup final.

Despite being one of the players caught up in the altercation, the Barcelona star believes the emotions displayed after Spain’s dramatic victory are part of football’s competitive nature and should not lead to lengthy disciplinary action.

Gavi appeals for calm

Following Spain’s World Cup triumph over Argentina, tensions boiled over after the final whistle as players from both sides became involved in a mass confrontation.

Gavi found himself at the centre of the incident after clashing with Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes, but the Spanish international has since urged football’s governing body to adopt a measured response.

Speaking during a homecoming celebration in Los Palacios y Villafranca, Gavi said:

“No, to be honest, I don’t think they should be suspended. I understand it’s not a good example for children, but there’s also a more violent side to football.”

He added:

“Perhaps the most logical thing would have been to send them off during the match, but in the end it’s all football and that’s how it has to be.”

Paredes faces scrutiny

Much of the criticism following the final has centred on Paredes’ conduct during the post-match melee.

The Boca Juniors midfielder was accused of grabbing Eric Garcia by the throat before wrestling Gavi to the ground during the confrontation, which reportedly began after Nahuel Molina challenged Spain captain Rodri moments after the final whistle.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni was among those attempting to restore order as players from both teams became involved in the heated exchange.

Despite the backlash, Paredes has yet to publicly apologise, instead using social media to congratulate his teammates and express pride in Argentina’s World Cup campaign.

Yamal adds humour to celebrations

While Gavi opted for reconciliation, teammate Lamine Yamal embraced the lighter side of the rivalry during Spain’s victory celebrations.

The Barcelona youngster was seen smiling while holding a fan-made sign comparing the confrontation between Spain and Argentina to a celebrity boxing event, drawing laughter from supporters as La Roja celebrated their first World Cup title since 2010.

The moment quickly went viral on social media, highlighting the contrasting reactions within Spain’s victorious squad.

Focus shifts beyond the controversy

Although FIFA is expected to review the incidents from the final, Gavi’s comments reflect a desire to move beyond the controversy and focus on Spain’s historic achievement.

La Roja secured their second World Cup title after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time, capping an outstanding tournament in which Luis de la Fuente’s side also extended their unbeaten run to a record-breaking 38 matches.

For Gavi, the celebrations should remain about Spain’s success rather than the ugly scenes that followed the final whistle.
