Cristiano Ronaldo gets backing from Jorge Jesus as new Portugal boss confirms Al-Nassr star remains central to World Cup plans

New Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has thrown his full support behind Cristiano Ronaldo, insisting the Al-Nassr superstar will continue to play a key role for the national team as long as he remains fit and performing at the highest level.

The experienced manager, who recently enjoyed success alongside Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia, believes the Portugal captain is still an invaluable figure both on and off the pitch.

Jesus confirms Ronaldo remains in his plans

Having signed a four-year contract to lead Portugal through to the 2030 World Cup, Jesus has made it clear that Ronaldo remains central to his vision for the national team.

Despite the forward turning 41, the new Portugal boss believes his quality, professionalism and leadership still make him worthy of selection.

Speaking about his plans, Jesus said:

“As long as he’s playing and is in a condition to be selected, I will pick him, within certain limits and under the conditions that I consider best for the national team.”

Jesus and Ronaldo already share a successful working relationship following their time together at Al-Nassr.

Addressing concerns about managing one of football’s biggest personalities, Jesus dismissed any suggestion of potential conflict.

“I haven’t spoken with him yet. Cristiano Ronaldo is never going to be a problem for the national team. Not for the national team, nor for me.”

He added:

“I had great pleasure working with him this past year. He’s easy to work with.”

Portugal begin a new chapter

Jesus replaces Roberto Martinez following Portugal’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Selecao were eliminated in the round of 16 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Spain, prompting Martinez to step down after admitting he had failed to achieve his primary objective.

The former Portugal boss explained:

“I came to Portugal to win the World Cup, and I think that, without winning it, there’s no point in continuing.”

Portugal’s federation has now entrusted Jesus with guiding a talented squad into a new era, with the experienced coach tasked with maximizing a generation featuring stars such as Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leao and Joao Neves.
