Italian Cricket Faces Governance Crisis Days After T20 World Cup Debut
Italian cricket is facing a storm just days after its historic debut at the T20 World Cup 2025, following serious allegations against a senior official in the national governing body.
Federazione Cricket Italiana (FCRI) women’s cricket co-ordinator Prabath Ekneligoda, 57, is under investigation over a sexual assault claim made by a member of the Italy women’s national cricket team. The allegation reportedly stems from a training session massage in March 2025.
Board Resignations And Governance Concerns
Multiple members of the FCRI board have resigned over this case and other governance issues, raising questions about transparency and leadership in Italian cricket. A decision on whether there is sufficient evidence to bring the matter to trial is expected soon. Ekneligoda has denied the allegation, claiming ulterior motives and citing a supportive witness.
The FCRI released a statement emphasizing that it will cooperate with judicial authorities and is guided by principles of fairness, transparency, and ethical standards. Despite his suspension in November 2025, Ekneligoda remained a visible figure during Italy’s T20 World Cup campaign, attending matches and official events alongside FCRI president Maria Lorena Haz Paz.
Impact On Italian Cricket’s Debut
Italy’s debut in the T20 World Cup had captured global attention, with the Azzurri beating Nepal and challenging England in Group C. However, senior officials fear that ongoing investigations and reputational damage could hinder the growth of the sport in Italy and overshadow the team’s on-field achievements.
The FCRI president, Haz Paz, whose term runs until 2028, is under increased scrutiny, and the federation must navigate this crisis while preserving the momentum from Italy’s first taste of the global cricket stage.
