Fans Call For Finidi George Sack As Rivers United Continental Dream Collapses
The honeymoon period is officially over.
What began with optimism and belief has now spiraled into anger, disbelief, and open revolt, as Rivers United supporters call for the immediate dismissal of head coach Finidi George following another disastrous continental outing.
One Point From Twelve: The Numbers That Broke The Fans
Rivers United’s 1–0 home defeat to Zambia’s Power Dynamos on Sunday proved to be the final straw for many fans. The loss leaves the Pride of Rivers bottom of Group A with just one point from a possible 12, an alarming return for a club with continental ambitions.
The defeat, played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, has effectively ended Rivers United’s hopes of progression, with tougher fixtures still ahead.
Social Media Explodes With Anger
Almost immediately after the final whistle, social media platforms were flooded with furious reactions. Supporters questioned not just the performance, but Finidi George’s continued presence on the bench.
One angry fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Please sack that your useless coach @FinidiGeorge_FG. He cost Nigeria the World Cup and still cost me over half a million naira today.”
Others echoed similar sentiments:
“Finidi still has his job after 1 point from possible 12?” one fan asked.
“Wow! That’s a shocker. How do you lose to a team from Zambia at home??? What a shame!” another added.
For some supporters, the frustration went beyond football pride — it became personal, emotional, and even financial.
Dominance Without Direction
What made the defeat even harder to accept was the match statistics.
Rivers United enjoyed 71% possession, registered 20 shots, and pinned Power Dynamos back for long spells. Yet none of it mattered. The Zambian side scored with their only real chance in the 50th minute through Kondwani Chiboni, punishing Rivers United’s lack of cutting edge.
It was a performance that raised serious questions about tactical clarity, decision-making, and game management.
Finidi’s Past Still Haunting Him
Finidi George’s coaching credentials are not in doubt — his domestic success with Enyimba remains a strong part of his résumé. However, his short and controversial stint with the Super Eagles, which many fans still blame for Nigeria’s shaky World Cup qualification campaign, continues to follow him.
Now, that criticism has resurfaced in club football.
With daunting fixtures against Pyramids FC and RS Berkane still to come, Rivers United’s mathematical chances of survival are slim to none.
What Next For Rivers United?
For supporters, patience has run out. The belief among the fanbase is clear: a change in leadership is the only remaining option.
The so-called “miracle in Uyo” never arrived. Instead, Rivers United find themselves staring at early elimination, mounting pressure, and an increasingly volatile atmosphere.
Whether the club hierarchy listens to the fans remains to be seen — but one thing is certain: the heat around Finidi George has reached boiling point.
