“So Much Power” – Why Christian Pulisic Moving To MLS Now Would Be A Terrible Idea

Christian Pulisic is at a fascinating crossroads in his career — and according to USMNT legend Brad Friedel, now is absolutely not the time to look homeward.

Despite growing speculation about a potential return to Major League Soccer (MLS), Friedel has made it clear: bringing Pulisic back to the U.S. at this stage would be bad for both the player and the league.

“If somebody came in like your Weston McKennie and your Christian Pulisic, they would have so much power at an MLS club, I would worry that they wouldn’t be focused on just getting better.”

It’s not a knock on MLS quality alone — it’s about competitive pressure.

No promotion or relegation.
Less fear of losing your place.
Less internal competition.

For elite athletes, Friedel believes that environment can quietly lower standards.

Europe Still Sharpens The Knife

Friedel made an analogy that hits home:
Would you rather see NBA stars leave the NBA for the EuroLeague in their prime?

The same logic applies here.

The Champions League, Serie A, Premier League, and elite European competition still represent the sharpest testing grounds in world football. And Friedel wants America’s best tested there — especially with a home World Cup approaching.

“I want as many of the best players for the national team playing at the highest level of competition they can.”

MLS can wait. The world stage cannot.

Messi Has Changed MLS — But Not Enough

There’s no denying the Messi effect. Lionel Messi, alongside other global stars, has dramatically raised MLS visibility and commercial appeal.

But Friedel is clear: branding growth does not automatically equal competitive readiness.

MLS is growing — fast — but it’s not yet a prime-career league for elite US internationals.

The AC Milan Contract Question

Adding fuel to the debate is Pulisic’s unresolved contract situation at AC Milan.

His current deal runs until 2027, with an option for a further year, but no extension has been signed yet. That silence has sparked:

• Questions about Milan’s internal stability

Friedel hinted that the delay may not be about Pulisic leaving — but about Milan needing to prove ambition.

“It could be a case of he would love to stay, but the club has got to get its act together too.”
