Wayne Rooney Watched Kai At Old Trafford In Pyjamas As Man Utd Legend Reveals Hilarious Wardrobe Mishap

Wayne Rooney watching Kai Rooney play for Manchester United at Old Trafford

Wayne Rooney has done many iconic things at Old Trafford — scoring screamers, lifting trophies, and captaining Manchester United. But watching a match in pyjamas might just be his most relatable moment yet.

The Manchester United legend has revealed a hilarious wardrobe blunder that saw him attend his son Kai Rooney’s special night at the Theatre of Dreams wearing what he thought was a tracksuit… but turned out to be sleepwear.

Kai Rooney Makes Old Trafford Debut Moment

Sixteen-year-old Kai Rooney featured for Manchester United’s Under-18 side in an FA Youth Cup clash against Derby County on Friday night. The game went the distance, finishing 0-0 after 90 minutes before both teams scored in extra time. United eventually edged the contest 2-1, with Kai coming off the bench to play his part.

Playing two years above his age group, Kai received a warm reception from the crowd, who broke into chants of “Rooney, Rooney” — a surreal echo of his father’s legendary career at the same stadium.

Wayne and wife Coleen were in attendance, alongside club executives including Jason Wilcox, Christopher Vivell, and Stephen Torpey.

Rooney’s Pyjama Mix-Up Explained

Despite trying to keep things low-key, Rooney admitted he made an unforgettable fashion error. Speaking on his BBC Sport podcast, the former England captain explained how the mix-up happened.

“I went into my wardrobe and picked what I thought was an oversized tracksuit,” Rooney said. “I tried it on and thought, ‘That’s actually quite comfortable.’ I threw a big coat over it and went to the game.”

It wasn’t until he got home that the truth emerged.

“Coleen asked to check the label,” Rooney continued. “It was actually a pair of pyjamas. I went to watch my son’s first game at Old Trafford in pyjamas.”

To make matters even better, Rooney revealed he spent 10 minutes chatting with Jason Wilcox while unknowingly dressed for bedtime.

A Proud Dad Moment

Despite the embarrassment, Rooney made it clear the night meant everything to him.

“It was a great, proud moment,” he said. “He came on and helped the team get over the line. First thing Kai said in the car was, ‘The pitch was massive.’”

Rooney also reflected on how Old Trafford’s scale can feel overwhelming — something even he experienced as a player.

Carrick Reviving United’s Academy Culture

Rooney also praised interim boss Michael Carrick for reconnecting the first team with the academy, noting that Carrick and his staff were actively watching youth matches — something he believes had been missing in recent years.

“It gives the players and parents a lift,” Rooney said. “That’s how the club should be run.”

With Kai Rooney stepping onto the Old Trafford pitch and Carrick reopening pathways for youth players, Manchester United’s future may be quietly taking shape — pyjamas and all.
